An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA), with good interpersonal skills and a committed team member to join the Clinical Genomics department.
Cytogenetics is part of the Clinical Genomics Department bringing together cytogenetics, translational science, bioinformatics and molecular diagnostics and is one of the few specialised clinical genomics laboratories of cancer in Europe. The laboratory provides a diagnostic service for haematological malignancy and solid tumours for several NHS Trusts and Cancer Networks, as well as participating in clinical trials.
Main duties of the job
- Provide technical and clerical support for the scientific teams within the Cytogenetics Laboratory and, if necessary, in related Pathology or research disciplines.
- The work includes receiving and processing of specimens submitted to the department for Cytogenetic investigations, and associated clerical and administrative work. This involves a number of regular tasks as well as occasional duties in response to specific requests.
- Have responsibility for stock control processes ensuring accurate recording of usage so that an adequate supply of all consumables and reagents can be maintained.
- To maintain a high level of accuracy and reliability, and collaborate with other members of the laboratory and other departments to achieve the maximum efficiency and quality of the service provided.

- Undertake aseptic techniques on samples and reagents to decant them or during tissue culture.
- Label tubes for cultures and establish cell cultures from various sample types as directed.
- Sort fixed cell suspensions for safe disposal or transfer into labelled containers for long term storage. Sort samples for short-term storage or safe disposal.
- Prepare and package samples so they can be safely transported to other centres.
- Use laboratory equipment for preparation of samples and reagents. Monitor safety, performance and temperature range of equipment and advise scientific staff of any deviation from norm.
- Prepare and measure out chemicals and reagents used in the processing and analysis of samples. Record chemical and reagent batch numbers and operator details as part of the quality control regime of the laboratory.
