An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 clinical nurse specialist in GI late effects. The post holder has a responsibility to patients in providing a comprehensive specialist nursing service under the guidance of the medical and senior nursing team.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and experienced, who enjoys patient contact and working in a multi-disciplinary environment to support the delivery of a quality service. You must be able to demonstrate good communication skills, flexibility, reliability, be willing to learn and have an organised approach to work.

Due to the nature of the role, we are looking for a dependable and highly adaptable individual who is able to work independently, keen to develop themselves and has the ability to fit in quickly and work well as part of the team in the GIANT service.

Main duties of the job

  • Clinical leadership to the nursing teams, maintaining credibility through practice and provide a high quality and safe patient service, which exceeds patient expectations.
  • Routine management of patients with long term effects of their cancer treatment
  • Using advanced clinical decision making and assessment skills, prompt treatment plans or referrals will be initiated to effectively manage acute and chronic cancer-related complications and/or toxicities from systemic anti-cancer treatments (SACT), supportive therapies and/or radiotherapy.
  • Telephone triage of patients reporting side-effects / complications.
  • Booking of routine and emergency investigations.

Essential

  • First level registration
  • Degree in Nursing (Adult)
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Post Registration qualification in cancer or gastroenterology nursing or equivalent
  • Teaching, assessing or mentorship qualification

Desirable

  • Relevant formal teaching / mentoring experience
  • ILS
  • Completed Physical assessment course/Advanced physical assessment course
  • Independent nurse prescriber
  • MSc or working towards in relevant subject

Experience

Essential

  • Significant post registration nursing experience in oncology and/or gastroenterology to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job.
  • Expertise in some aspects of chronic changes in bowel function following cancer treatment.
  • Excellent understanding and experience in the recognition and management of ongoing oncological conditions.
