Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Clinical Research Nurse post within Early Diagnosis and Detection Team.NHS Long Term Plan is aiming to diagnose 75% of patients for 3 out of 4 cancer types by 2028, currently this stands at 55% of early diagnosis on average, and lower in high risk cancers, therefore there is a need for an Early Detection and Diagnosis.
The ED&D services at RMH/ICR is a new centre and interested in developing a cohesive strategy in their approach to Early Detection and Diagnosis. As a unit they will provide a cross cutting service to a range of teams within RMH/ICR enhanced by having a highly specialised skill set for Early Detection & Diagnosis. Post holder will lead the clinical research working in the field of ED & D at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in Chelsea. The role will require the post holder to be flexible in their approach, mainly being based at The Royal Marsden Hospital and The Royal Brompton Hospital sites, but they will also be supporting local sites where mobile imaging units are located. Visiting and working in these sites will be necessary (transport to these local sites from RBH can be arranged if needed).
Main duties of the job
The experienced research nurse works as a self-directed practitioner, with a key role to play in the organisation and management of projects (both research and clinical) within the Trust. These trials may be related to Early Diagnosis and Detection(ED&D), anti-cancer treatment (e.g. chemotherapy, radiotherapy, biological therapy, gene therapy or surgery), symptom management or some other aspect of cancer care, such as screening. Central to the role are the recruitment, education and monitoring of patients entering a research project. Working closely with the chief/principal investigator/research fellow and members of the multidisciplinary team, s/he will support patients who choose to participate in clinical trials by providing advice and information and acting as the patients' advocate. S/he will take responsibility for the co-ordination and management of clinical research portfolio, collaborating with key personnel to ensure continued care and support for patients involved in clinical trials. The post holder will support more junior research nurses/staff members, assisting them to develop their clinical research skills thorough education and training, this may also include line management further down the line. Further responsibility will include monitoring and raising the standard of nursing input within the team.
