Band 3 Radiotherapy Department Assistant- Sutton site.The Royal Marsden Hospital is one of Europe's largest Oncology centres and was the world's first hospital dedicated to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and education, with sites in Chelsea and Sutton.We are currently inviting applications from enthusiastic individuals to join the Radiotherapy team at our Sutton site in a Monday-Friday role.

Main duties of the job

The Radiotherapy Department Assistant (RDA) will be responsible for assisting in the provision of the Radiotherapy service and the role will include the provision of appropriate patient care. The post-holder will be required to work closely with a team of highly skilled professionals to facilitate the smooth running of this outpatient department.

The post holder will be required to handle enquiries from patients, their carers, Trust and non-Trust staff in person or by telephone. The post holder will have patient contact, both adult and paediatric, including contact with the terminally ill. Key working relationships in the department will be with the therapeutic radiographers, nursing, clerical and medical staff. In addition, there will be contact with consultants and their secretaries throughout the Trust and other Health Services. Patient presentation will include the unconscious, incapacitated, confused and those with physical and mental disabilities. The post holder will be required to work limited flexible hours as required.

Clinical Responsibility

To adhere to local rules relating to radiation protection. To comply with written systems of work which includes correct identification of patients in accordance with RMH IR(ME)R 2000 Employers Procedures. To practice the Care Certificate To communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after their radiotherapy appointment. The monitoring and recording of patients vital signs (including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation, respiration rate) reporting any abnormal results. The measuring and recording of patient height and weight. Performing venepuncture and venous blood sampling after training and assessment of competency. Undertaking clinical tasks relevant to the specific clinical area following competency sign off, for example, ECG, urinalysis, blood glucose, MRSA screening swabs, recording of allergies on EPIC and other clinical tasks where training/competency sign off are deemed appropriate for a healthcare support worker.

Administrative & Clerical Responsibility

To handle all enquiries, in person or by telephone, including the passage of information in a timely manner.

To record patient attendance and notify relevant staff when patients arrive.

To assist clerical staff in making bookings and scheduling patients for examination, considering clinical priority and scheduling accordingly.

To undertake daily equipment checks and document compliance or report repairs/faulty equipment as necessary, e.g. resuscitation trolley, oxygen and suction equipment, fridge temperatures and emergency equipment.
