Job summary

Wiltshaw Ward is a Private Care Ward with 17 en-suite rooms. We provide care for Medical Haematology and Oncology patients. We specialise in providing cellular therapy treatment, such as CAR T-cell therapy and systemic anti-cancer treatment. We also perform autologous transplants. We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated and committed Health Care Assistant to be part of our team.

The post holder needs excellent communication skills, to be highly organised, and deliver quality care to the highest standards.

Main duties of the job

  • To carry out in a responsible and efficient way, the nursing care for patients which has been drawn up in conjunction with the co-ordinator of the shift.
  • To demonstrate the ability to develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the different treatment modalities, and work autonomously under supervision of a registered nurse.
  • As an integral member of the nursing team work with team members to ensure the maintenanceof an efficient, safe, clean and pleasant environment for all patients.

  • Assisting with nutrition where applicable e.g. assisting with menu completion, feeding assistance. Working closely with the ward host/hostess and housekeeper. Understanding the dietary needsof patients and utilise diet charts and fluid balance charts appropriately.
  • Liaising with the trusts MDT as appropriate to ensure complete holistic care is provided and harm free care is monitored.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of infection control issues including attendance at mandatory training; an understanding of policy and procedure and accept responsibility for their own infection control practice and a willingness to challenge others practice.
  • Demonstrates and understanding of nursing care plans and utilise them in line with Trust policy and procedure.
  • Directing or escorting patients and their belongings between departments and clinical areas.

  • Care Certificate - or the ability to attain the Care certificate within 12 weeks (if working 30 hrs or more) or 20 weeks (if working up to 30 hrs)
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a healthcare setting.
  • Understanding of working with patients who are critically and chronically ill.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development

Desirable

  • NVQ in Health and Social Care Level 2

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting for a duration long enough to have obtained relevant competencies for a Band 3 position. Experience of working with computers (keyboard skills, data entry)

  • Experience of working with oncology patients
