Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Speech and Language Therapist to join our dynamic team at the Royal Marsden Hospital, in Chelsea, for maternity cover for a year. The post holder will be involved in pre-treatment, on treat and follow up clinics for those with head and neck cancer including laryngectomy as well as intensive dysphagia therapy rehabilitation programmes. They will also be involved in the care of patients in CCU. There will be opportunities to see other patients with a cancer diagnosis including neuro oncology and gastro intestinal cancers and ability to be involved in FEES and videofluoroscopy clinics. The department has a high research profile and there will be opportunities to further this area of interest. Main duties of the job

1. To be responsible for the provision of a highly specialist clinical service, from acute to palliative and terminal stages of care, across the lifespan, to patients referred to the Trust with a wide range of communication and/or swallowing disorders secondary to cancer and/or its treatment. The main referral source is the Head and Neck (H&N) Unit who provide a clinically complex case load where patients have undergone radical treatment including surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. 2. To take the SLT lead on tracheostomy management within the Trust including leading on the development of protocols and programmes in this clinical area, working closely with and actively participating in MDTs; liaising with other specialist hospitals to ensure appropriate common care pathways are established and effective and appropriate information is maintained. 3. To take the SLT role in the development and delivery of teaching and training programmes for professionals and other staff as required. 4. To be responsible for disseminating knowledge, within the Trust and on a national and international basis, through reading, participation in research and advanced clinical practice.

1. To demonstrate highly specialist clinical skills with both in and out patients, across the lifespan, when managing their swallowing and/or communication problems related to the nature and stage (acute to terminal/end) of their cancer.

  • Registered MRCSLT
  • Registered member of HCPC
  • Masters or equivalent of post-graduate specialist training and membership/committee role in relevant CEN
  • Attended post graduate dysphagia training leading to independent practice.
  • Attended specialist post graduate study relevant to ENT or Head & Neck cancer e.g advanced dysphagia course including tracheostomy management and Surgical Voice Restoration.
  • Attended specialist/expert short courses relevant to head & neck cancer e.g advanced videofluoroscopy and/ or FEES
  • Post graduate training/experience in videofluoroscopy

Desirable

  • Advanced counselling
  • Post graduate training/ experience in videofluoroscopy with patients with laryngectomy
  • Post graduate training in the use of AAC with adults.
