Job summary
An exciting opportunity following progression of the current post holder has been made available within endoscopy service at the Royal Marsden Hospital to recruit a new Practice Educator for Endoscopy covering both Chelsea and Sutton. After the recent opening of the new endoscopy suite at the New Oak Cancer Centre in Sutton and expansion plans in Chelsea with a new unit and innovative endoscopic modalities , there is no better time to join the team.
The successful applicant will be an experienced and competent endoscopy nurse with a proven track record of teaching experience at a band 6 level or higher across the endoscopy patient pathway (pre-assessment, admissions/recovery and assisting for diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures). This role is crucial in ensuring that all of the education and training requirements of all clinical, non-clinical staff are in line with the JETS workforce requirements and national competency standards/framework of endoscopy practice (e.g. JAG/ BSG).
Main duties of the job
The Practice Educator is an experienced clinical registered nurse with advanced knowledge and skills in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy pathways from pre-assessment up to discharge. He/she will deliver safe provision of care with strong practice development support to clinical staff and junior doctor who are new to the service.
The pose holder will coordinate and facilitate practice education related activities for registered and non-registered Endoscopy workforce across Chelsea and Sutton. The practice educator will support and contribute to the implementation of education and development plans which involve the induction, supervision/mentoring, preceptorship and the ongoing professional development of all staff on the unit. This will also include ensuring robust systems are in place to record and monitor performance against agreed targets.
The post holder is required to have good understanding of JAG requirement to deliver quality safety practice in the Endoscopy and Decontamination service at the RMH. A key area of focus will be JETS Workforce Endoscopy training and implementation.

A significant element of the role involves leading on audits and collating of evidence required for JAG accreditation with the support of the matron and endoscopy charge nurses for both sites.
The role will require 50% of the contracted hours to be in clinical practice to ensure that the post-holder will retain his/her clinical skills.
The department rarely has any vacancy and does not use any agency staffing which is a testament to staff retention.

Be clinically proficient in all aspects of endoscopy care pathway (e.g. sedation/general anaesthetic pre-assessment, admissions/recovery, procedure room care) which may include supporting the decontamination unit following training.Participate in the endoscopy coordinator rota ensuring high-quality, efficient and safe endoscopy service every shift.To take overall responsibility for the clinical area when in charge, utilising resources effectively and to ensure that safe staffing levels are maintained throughout the shift.Provide evidence-based information and support to patients and other departments as appropriate, following consultation with members of the multi-disciplinary team.To be flexible in the approach within the endoscopy department and provide cover for any area that may require endoscopy staff support (e.g. theatres /interventional radiology) as appropriate to knowledge and training.To take part in the in/out of hours endoscopy on-call rota and manage own and others workload.
