Ward Manager (BAND 7) - Day Surgery

Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Sister for Private Day Surgery Unit (PDSU). The ward sister/ Charge Nurse will be expected to co-ordinate all functions and activities within the specialist clinical environment of pre-assessment, day case and inpatient day of surgery. The role includes working alongside Theatres, CCU, Interventional Radiology, Admissions and Pre-assessment and The Clinical Site Practitioner team and the Wards. The Sister / Charge Nurse will provide strong leadership, co-ordinate training of the PDSU team, provide good communication, teamwork and collaboration with all surgical colleagues. The successful candidate will be an oncology nurse with proven leadership skills and the vision and passion to help develop a new service and optimise high quality patient care. Being a good team player, they will work with the Matron and nursing team leaders to help foster good communication and improved processes to enhance the patient pathway. This is a demanding but very rewarding role with a Trust that is committed to the ongoing development of its staff. You must possess a first level degree and a relevant oncology or cancer qualification. You will also have at least 5 year's experience in a oncology or cancer setting with surgical background. We are looking for a strong clinical leader with good collaborative skills who is enthusiastic about enhancing patient care through service improvement.

Main duties of the job

1.1 To create and maintain a safe, therapeutic clinical environment for all patients and their families who attend the Surgical Admissions Day Unit. To co-ordinate all functions and activities within the specialist clinical environment of pre-assessment, daycase and inpatient day of surgery.1.2 The role includes working alongside Theatres, CCU, Interventional Radiology, Admissions and Pre-assessment and The Clinical Site Practitioner team and the Wards.1.3 The Sister / Charge Nurse will provide strong leadership, co-ordinate training of the DSU team, provide good communication, teamwork and collaboration with all surgical colleagues.1.4 Ensure all activities are carried out according to the NMC Code of Conduct and the Royal Marsden NHS foundation Trust Policies and Procedures.This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced registered nurse seeking a new challenge as a Sister / Charge Nurse. 2.1.1 To ensure all patients attending for daycase surgery are appropriately pre-assessed for their surgical procedure. To ensure all staff are appropriately trained and educated around the importance of pre-assessment, ensuring patients are safely prepared for Theatre. Give pre-operative advice and support and initiate appropriate referral to other members of the multi-disciplinary team.2.1.2 To ensure all documents and medical test results are available and reviewed prior to surgery and to liaise with the Consultant Anaesthetist leading the theatre list.2.1.3 To undertake appropriate assessment of the needs of the patient and family and organising their care whilst undergoing diagnostic and or assessment procedures within the unit.2.1.4 To liaise and work closely with the Operating Theatres and Anaesthetic Department to provide the patient with an efficient and safe transfer through the procedure / surgery.2.1.5 Leads on the development of care pathways and new initiatives in Daysurgery and Preassessment.2.1.6 To assess the educational and informational needs of patients and carers in DSU.
