Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a pharmacist to take the lead on the provision of clinical pharmacy services to Oncology units at the Trust and support the development of the pharmacy department workforce to attract and retain the best staff, to continue to provide the best patientcare. This is a high-profile role working closely with the multidisciplinary team, with the current post holder working as a non-medical prescriber in regular clinic sessions. The post is based at the Chelsea site, but some cross site working will be required.

The Royal Marsden moved to a new Epic Digital Health record in March 2023 which has revolutionised how we deliver care. We are currently piloting an outpatient clinic pharmacy service which, alongside the implementation of Epic, has brought Pharmacy to the forefront of how we deliver patient care, and this post holder will be crucial in supporting and continually improving this service.

Main duties of the job

To lead, strategically co-ordinate and evaluate a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to the Oncology Units in accordance with the priorities set by the Head of Clinical Services in order to ensure safe, clinically effective and cost-efficient use of medicines to these patients.

To provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care, contributing to the multi-professional team through ward pharmacy services and attendance on appropriate clinician's ward rounds, clinics and meetings.

To support prescribing and work as an independent prescriber at the individual level, contributing to the optimisation of the individual patients' drug therapy with due consideration to risk/benefit issues.

To communicate effectively with all healthcare professionals to ensure the safe, clinically effective and cost-efficient use of drugs to oncology patients.

Identify any systematic or preventable errors associated with medicines used within the Oncology Units and facilitate learning.

To proactively develop clinical pharmacy services and new medicines pathways in the Oncologysetting in line with local and national objectives and contribute to clinical quality improvement projects.

To monitor and interpret published evidence in order to implement agreed policies aimed at improving treatment outcome; facilitating implementation of NHSE/NICE guidance as appropriate.

To develop and maintain drug protocols and treatment guidelines for disease management within the clinical unit, following drug evaluations and drug utilisation review.

To interpret published data on new drugs affecting the specialty across the Trust and, in conjunction with medical staff, prepare drug evaluations for the clinical unit prior to application to the Drug and Therapeutics Committee.

To provide evaluated pharmaceutical information to the Drug and Therapeutics Committee as requested.

To monitor prescribing trends and interpret computer reports of drug usage in order to provide detailed monthly drug expenditure reports for the lead clinicians and the general manager for the Clinical Business Unit (CBU). To liaise with Service Development, Service manager and the Oncology team to forecast drug expenditure.

To provide internal and external education and training to pharmacy and other healthcare professionals in relation to oncology cancer medicines and to evaluate the training provided.

To act as lead pharmacist with respect to Oncology Unit clinical trials such as review of protocols to ensure appropriate prescriptions are in place.

To develop and implement clinical governance strategies, within the Trust, to the Oncology Unit.
