Job summary

The Royal Marsden Hospital is Europe's largest Oncology centre with sites in Chelsea and Sutton. The Nuclear Medicine PET/CT and Radioisotope Therapy is looking for an enthusiastic and well-motivated individual to join our team on the Chelsea site. The successful candidate will help to support the department as a whole and ensure that the service is patient-focused and provides high quality care.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate a commitment to professional development, an enthusiasm for their work and show a keen interest in the future of both their profession and the Diagnostic Imaging Service. Nuclear Medicine qualification and experience is essential. Full training in PET/CT will be provided where required. The candidate will be expected to support both the service and its staff in continuing to maintain and develop the highest standards of imaging. The position will predominantly be at our Chelsea site.

Main duties of the job

Job Purpose

The post holder will be responsible for the timely, efficient and courteous provision of Nuclear Medicine and PET services.
The post-holder will liaise with a variety of staff throughout the Trust, including wards and theatres and with those from other NHS trusts. The key working relationships in the department will be with the imaging, medical, clerical and nursing staff.
The post holder will have considerable patient contact, including contact with the terminally ill. Patient presentation will include the unconscious, incapacitated, confused and those with physical and mental disabilities.

Clinical

To ensure correct identification of patients
To ensure the timely, efficient and courteous provision of imaging services within the available resources. This will involve booking of patient appointments, explanation of procedures, cannulation and injecting of patients, administration of oral, intravenous and inhaled radiopharmaceuticals, as well as operation of the gamma cameras and PET/CT scanner.
To provide both qualitative and quantitative results to agreed standards.
To ensure that all data analysis, hard copy production and archiving is performed in a timely, consistent and accurate manner.
To comply with written systems of work.
To ensure statutory and Trust standards for record keeping are adhered to.
To ensure the safety and wellbeing of patients and visitors within the department.
To adhere to the local rules relating to radiation protection.
To ensure that statutory Departmental and Trust requirements for record keeping are met.
To ensure that quality assurance of equipment and general care and cleaning is carried out in line with departmental policy, recording and reporting faults in a timely manner and where appropriate implementing corrective action.
To report any deficiencies in the quality of service provision to the Radioisotope Services Manager or his/her Deputy.
To participate in the extended hour rota and be willing to adopt a flexible approach to working hours if required.
To notify the Radioisotope Services Manager and/or Deputy Service Lead of any untoward incidents as appropriate and according to departmental procedures and protocols.
To ensure security in the work environment and maintain the integrity of all Controlled Areas.
To ensure that materials required for safe manual handling of immobile patients are always available, maintained in good working order and that the need for repairs / replacements are highlighted.
To perform examinations on multiple gamma cameras and the PET/CT scanner to the agreed departmental and national standards as appropriate.
To be physically able to move moderately heavy items of equipment (e.g. collimators, lead pots, CT phantoms) throughout the working day.
To position the patient for the full range of Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT examinations, to ensure that image quality, patient comfort and patient safety are maintained at all times, whilst taking into account patient limitations and adapting standard techniques where necessary.
To perform a full range of diagnostic Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT procedures as required within the department, managing patient priority as appropriate.
To provide patients or relatives with empathy and emotional support.
To communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after an examination. In particular, to be sensitive to patient anxiety regarding the claustrophobic nature of the gamma cameras and PET/CT scanner and to be able to help patients overcome their anxiety so that the examination can be performed.
To ensure appropriate infection control measures are utilised where necessary. Paying particular attention to personal protection as well as the management of equipment and linen where contamination from bodily fluids has occurred.
To be trained and become skilled in the performance of venepuncture and intravenous cannulation and manual injection of radioactive tracers on all patients, including paediatrics.
To be skilled in the use of in situ central venous access lines, to ensure that they are used in accordance with Trust protocols.
To operate advanced software on the gamma cameras and PET/CT scanner requiring excellent hand-eye co-ordination.
Where imaging reveals pathology which requires urgent medical attention (e.g. pulmonary embolism) to bring such findings to the attention of a Nuclear Medicine physician, and in his/her absence, to the attention of the referring clinician.
To administer (intravenous, oral, sub-cutaneous and via inhalation) diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals, to scan patients and provide both qualitative and quantitative results to agreed standards.
To handle unsealed radioactive sources in a safe manner appropriate for their use, ensuring personal safety and the safety of the patients and other staff within the department.
To handle and dispose of radioactive, contaminated body fluids (faeces, blood, urine etc.) in a manner appropriate to the level of bio-hazard and radiation hazard.
To handle and dispose of radioactive and biohazard sharps in an appropriate manner.
To work predominantly at the Chelsea Nuclear Medicine Department and rotate to the Sutton Nuclear Medicine Department as and when needed.
