Job summary

This post will support the Head of Clinical Services Pharmacist to lead, manage & develop the Clinical pharmacy Anti-microbial, CCU & Surgery team at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.

This post will be key to providing leadership and support on a day-to-day basis. Also, to support the development and delivery of a high-quality clinical pharmacy service and workforce to ensure we can attract and retain the best staff, to continue to treat patients at RMH. It is a high-profile post within an innovative team. The post is based on the Chelsea site but will require cross-site working.

Main duties of the job

The key responsibilities of the post holder will be to lead, manage and co-ordinate antimicrobial medicines optimisation, in accordance with national strategies, policy, standards and system priorities. The postholder will work with the stakeholders to develop and implement our vision for the optimal use of antimicrobial agents by recognising and promoting best practice. Ensure that the clinical governance agenda, including risk management issues, are delivered in relation to antimicrobial drug use. Motivate and inspire other healthcare professionals to adopt ownership of, and responsibility for, prudent use of antimicrobials. Develop and implement a strategy to effectively influence antimicrobial prescribing in line with local and national objectives.

You will be supported by the Senior Pharmacy Leadership Team, the Consultant Microbiologist & the Infection Prevention & Control team.

As a Lead pharmacist you will provide a dynamic link between clinical practice and service development to deliver patient care ensuring the best experience and health outcomes for patients.

We are looking for a self-motivated and enthusiastic senior pharmacist with excellent communication skills to undertake the role and support the pharmacy and wider Trust teams, in continuing the development of services at the Royal Marsden. This will be a superb opportunity for a forward thinking and patient focused senior pharmacist to gain excellent experience at the forefront of oncology practice.

We will consider candidates who are yet to meet all the essential criteria as a progression against agreed milestones for consultant pharmacist credentialing.

Specialist Clinical Practice

Lead the delivery and development of a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service in relation to anti-infective use, CCU and surgery in accordance with the priorities set by the leadership team and senior pharmacy team to ensure safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of medicines to these patients.

To lead on pharmaceutical matters relating to anti-infective use, ensuring adherence to national/local guidelines and medicines legislation.

Able to develop a personalised pharmaceutical care plan for complex and specialist infection conditions and take responsibility for that plan. Act as an independent prescriber within specialist field.

Able to develop and be accountable for an appropriate monitoring plan for patients with complex infective pharmaceutical care needs.

Uses expert clinical practice to interpret complex laboratory tests and/or disease markers in the management of patients with infections.

Leadership

To lead and be responsible for the pharmacy team providing a clinical pharmacy service to CCU, surgery and antimicrobial stewardship to include day to day oversight of operations, implementation of clear processes for allocating and managing the workforce and skill mix optimisation.

To lead on developing and continually improving Pharmacy Services in line with Trust priorities, the Cancer Strategy and wider NHSE strategy on productivity, efficiency and care quality.

To develop and implement new models of care which utilise extended roles of pharmacy staff, including the pharmacist non-medical prescribing strategy and consultant level pharmacists.

To identify resources required, produce and implement business plans to optimise clinical pharmacy service delivery and medicines optimisation to meet the needs of the patients and other service users.

Essential

  • BPharm / MPharm / BSc (Pharmacy) or equivalent
  • Professional Registration with GPhC registration
  • Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in either Clinical Pharmacy/General Pharmacy Practice/Infectious Diseases (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Registered non-medical prescriber

Experience

  • Substantial post registration experience as a clinical pharmacist practitioner in anti-infective and infection management
  • Previous experience of contribution to the operational and strategic direction of the pharmacy department
  • Financial forecasting and managing drug expenditure to include contribution to delivering cost improvement programmes
  • Experience of contributing to the delivery of medication governance and medication safety
