Haemato-oncology is a complex and exciting discipline within pharmacy, with a multidisciplinary and innovative approach to patient care and delivery of services. It is an area of unprecedented growth in new medicines and exciting new technologies.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical and Cancer services pharmacist is a rotational position designed to develop pharmacists by enhancing their knowledge and skills, and providing the depth of experience required to progress towards more senior specialised posts in Cancer Pharmacy.

Clinical Pharmacy
- To provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care, contributing to the multidisciplinary team for clinical units as required, through ward pharmacy services and divisional support.
- To attend all relevant events such as Registrar/Consultant rounds/unit meetings as appropriate for the rotation
- To respond appropriately to requests from medical and nursing staff for information and advice about the selection and use of drug therapy.
- Take part in audit and project work to support medicines optimisation at the Trust.
- Participate in any pharmacy initiatives or working groups as appropriate.
- To support the Pharmacy team with the department strategy and delivery of the pharmacy vision within the department and throughout the Trust.
- Undertakes and participates in training and developing the team, acting as a role model for pharmacy staff e.g. band 6 pharmacists, pre-registration pharmacists, undergraduate pharmacy students and pharmacy technicians training programmes and teaching sessions for pre-registration, certificate, diploma pharmacists, other pharmacy staff, medical and nursing staff.
Day Case Chemotherapy Services
- Provide a clinical pharmacy service to the chemotherapy day units
- Support the medical and nursing teams though provision of pharmacy advice and support to ensure the safe and timely delivery of oncology services
- To work across the chemotherapy day units, outpatient department and clinic areas to clinically check the appropriateness of prescribing and promoting medicines optimisation
- Liaise with the pharmacy aseptic, dispensary and clinical teams and the multi-disciplinary team on the day units to ensure an efficient, effective and safe chemotherapy service is provided.
Clinical Trials and R&D
- To supervise the dispensing of clinical trials material for patients, on a daily basis, ensuring all appropriate documentation is completed in line with European legislation, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
- Appropriately manage and resolve any clinical queries with regards to patients trial prescriptions to maintain high standard of patient care
- To work with the clinical trials team to ensure patient services apply safe dispensing practices that are adhered to at all times.
- Promote optimal and appropriate drug use and high quality prescribing practice within the Trust
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- To gain a working knowledge of all sections of the pharmacy and therefore to be able to work competently and with the minimum of supervision in any section as and when required to do so. This includes providing support to aseptic services and dispensary areas.
