Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed Band 5 staff nurse to join our nursing team to provide expert care and support our patients in the Outpatients department, Radiotherapy and the Rapid Diagnostic and Assessment Centre (RDAC) at the Sutton site. The department manages several different clinics from breast one stop clinics, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgical clinics. The phlebotomy and CVAD service is also managed by the Outpatient team.

This is a great opportunity to develop your existing skills and knowledge, but also to learn new one's in caring for cancer patients at all points of their cancer pathway. The successful candidate will be a qualified Staff Nurse with at least a year's experience in an acute hospital setting. We are looking for someone who is flexible, a good team player with a real commitment to providing good quality patient care. Experience of working in a clinic setting would be an advantage but is not essential.

Main duties of the job

The Band 5 Staff Nurse is an integral member of the team in the Outpatients department (OPD) caring for a variety of patients. The post-holder will join our nursing team to provide expert care and support to our patients in the Outpatients department and RDAC.

The post holder will be based at The Royal Marsden in Sutton, initially working across both Outpatients and the Rapid Diagnostic and Assessment Centre (RDAC) . There will be a requirement to work shift patterns between the operating hours of 08:00 - 18:00 Monday to Friday.From May 2023, when the Sutton based Oak Cancer Centre (OCC) opens, Outpatients and RDAC will move to the new OCC building and the services will separate. The post holder will be aligned to the Outpatients service which will encompass all NHS Outpatient including haematology. There will be a requirement to work shift patterns between the operating hours of 08:00 - 20:00 Monday to Friday.

  • To complete the first level assessment of the patients needs to gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs of the patients with cancer and their families and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met.
  • To plan, document, deliver and evaluate care plans form admission through to discharge/transfer discussing this with the patient and multi-disciplinary teams and to alert the Sister/Charge Nurse of any changes to the patients health care needs.
  • To assist with teaching patients in preparation for investigations, treatment and homecare.
  • To be aware of the side effects of any treatment in progress, and adopt a problem-solving approach to minimise the potentially adverse reactions.
  • Be involved in the direct delivery of skilled specialised nursing care with supervision until competent (eg wound dressings, removal of drains and insertion of urinary catheters).
  • To develop an awareness of the protocols involved for patients undergoing clinical trails.
  • To be aware of all hospital policies and procedures and collaborate with other health care professionals to ensure that these are observe.
  • To be rostered as part of the ward to care for patients over a 24hr period.
