Job summary

Specialist Clinical and Cancer Services Pharmacist (Rotational position across the Sutton and Chelsea Hospital sites and the Sir William Rous Unit at Kingston hospital)

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated individual, focused on providing the best possible patient care and experience.

Oncology is one of the most diverse and exciting disciplines in pharmacy, with a multidisciplinary and innovative approach to patient care and delivery of services. Our pharmacists are well respected both within the Trust and nationally for their expertise within oncology and cancer services, and we are looking for a high calibre pharmacist to further enhance the team.

Previous experience of oncology is desirable but not essential as appropriate training will be provided. You will be working as part of a team of clinical pharmacists and technicians providing support to our patients within the outpatient, chemotherapy day unit, clinical trials, and inpatient settings.

The 9-month rotational program offers the opportunity to take advantage of the specialist clinical cancer services available at both hospital sites, ranging from oncology and haematology services (including bone marrow transplant), private care, clinical trials, paediatrics, critical care, and surgery. This is an ideal opportunity for a pharmacist with hospital experience to obtain significant and broad experience in clinical trials, haematology, and oncology pharmacy practice at a world-renowned cancer centre.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical and Cancer services pharmacist is a rotational position designed to develop pharmacists by enhancing their knowledge and skills, and providing the depth of experience required to progress towards more senior specialised posts in Cancer Pharmacy.

Pharmacists will work within the clinical pharmacy and multidisciplinary teams to ensure the safe and clinically effective use of medicines for inpatients, day care units and clinics within the Trust.Pharmacists will be expected to act as professional role models and mentors for our more junior pharmacist team, ensuring their clinical practice, values and behaviours meet the high standards of our department and the wider organisation.Rotations can include:o Medical day unit pharmacist / Clinic supporto Private careo Oncology ward services and supervisiono Clinical Trialso CCU and Surgeryo Haemato-oncology; including bone marrow transplant serviceso Paediatric oncology / Teenagers and young adult (TYA) services

Clinical Pharmacy

  • To provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care, contributing to the multidisciplinary team for clinical units as required, through ward pharmacy services and divisional support.
  • To attend all relevant events such as Registrar/Consultant rounds/unit meetings as appropriate for the rotation

Day Case Chemotherapy Services

  • Provide a clinical pharmacy service to the chemotherapy day units
  • Support the medical and nursing teams though provision of pharmacy advice and support to ensure the safe and timely delivery of oncology services
  • To work across the chemotherapy day units, outpatient department and clinic areas to clinically check the appropriateness of prescribing and promoting medicines optimisation

Clinical Trials and R&D

  • To supervise the dispensing of clinical trials material for patients, on a daily basis, ensuring all appropriate documentation is completed in line with European legislation, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • Appropriately manage and resolve any clinical queries with regards to patients trial prescriptions to maintain high standard of patient care
