University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279)

Fixed Term Consultant Stroke Physician

The closing date is 16 April 2026

Job summary

This is a new post at an exciting time in the development of our regional stroke service.

Stroke services at the Trust are currently provided from the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, Worthing Hospital and St Richard's Hospital, Chichester.

This post will be based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

There is a reconfiguration of stroke services across West Sussex underway.

From 2027, St Richards Hospital will host the designated Acute Stroke Centre for West Sussex with work underway to create a new purpose-built unit on that hospital site. The stroke service at Worthing will close at that point.

Alongside the build, the ICB / Trust is investing heavily in expanding the workforce across stroke services and the associated disciplines to deliver this expanded and redesigned service.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

  • Daily work on HASU including attending stroke calls and assessing patients for thrombolysis/thrombectomy
  • Daily TIA clinics
  • Answering advice and guidance requests from primary care.
  • OP stroke clinic (held weekly but shared between colleagues). Potential to expand this service including virtual and face to face appointments
  • Attendance at daily board rounds and MDTs
  • Please note that all the above duties are shared between colleagues to ensure continuity of care for patients and to allow individuals to develop their own sub speciality interest

On Call Commitment: 1 in 5weekends and 1 in 5 weekdays. Category A, 5% supplement. There is an expectation that patients will receive a consultant review as soon as possible - either on the day of admission or on the following morning.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Stroke medicine is a hyperacute speciality. The timetable is necessarily flexible and flexibility would be expected of any successful appointee. The current rota includes time off in lieu for working weekends. Expected weekday working hours are 8am to 5pm.

The ward sessions are varied and may include hyperacute work at the front door (we receive around 110 acute stroke calls per month), thrombectomy calls, ward rounds, regular MDTs and daily board rounds.

The stroke unit has 30 beds (8 monitored) and we care for any stroke patients outlying our bed base where stroke is the primary issue (generally another 5 beds).

The stroke team is supported by dedicated stroke nurse specialists and a therapy team including clinical psychology. Most patients will be discharged direct from the RSCH stroke unit, but around 10-15% are transferred to SRC at Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath for complex rehabilitation.

Proposed interview date June 2026
