The closing date is 05 March 2026

Job summary

Are you a qualified Paediatric Nurse with recent post registration experience and looking for a new challenge? Are you a soon to be or newly qualified paediatric nurse who loved their emergency department placement?

We have an exciting opportunity for band 5 paediatric nurses to join our supportive and friendly team of fantastic paediatric nurses in the Children's Emergency Department.

We are looking for nurses who are motivated, enthusiastic and who possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills along with the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team within the fast-paced environment of the Children's Emergency Department. We see approx. 20,000 children a year and that number is ever increasing.

We have a purpose built children's emergency department with its own entrance direct from the main ED and UTC front door. We are always encouraging our team to progress and plan to introduce trainee paediatric emergency practitioner posts in the near future.

Although based in children's ED, you will work regularly with adult nurses on our paediatric rotation and those who already competent in children's nursing. We all share one staff room and you will quickly become part of the whole ED family!

Main duties of the job

We are committed to supporting career pathways and encourage our staff to undertake specific courses such as PILS, APLS, Mentorship, Stabilisation of the acutely unwell child, mental health courses, university modules, as well as in house training such as venepuncture and cannulation.

We have regular simulation training with the paediatric medical team and support attending external SORT and other retrieval days. You will develop skills in resus and paediatric major's patients, as well as minor injuries and illnesses. We promote nurse led discharges and are leading the digital transition by introducing and embedding patient track for the emergency department.

In order to deliver the above, you will require a general understanding and knowledge of children's health needs including recent acute care experience. You may take responsibility for a specific area within the Emergency Department during a span of duty during absence of more senior staff.

At UHSussex, diversity is our strength, and we want you to feel included to help us always deliver Excellent Care Everywhere, as shown in our Outstanding for Caring CQC rating. Your uniqueness and experiences will be part of our creative and innovative community where everyone is encouraged to succeed. We have a range of staff networks to help break down barriers, and can offer a buddy to help new members settle in. We're proud to be a Disability Confident Employer (Level 3) and a Veteran Aware Trust.
