Job summary
This is a permanent Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Consultant appointment with a sub-specialty interest in head and neck oncology based in West Sussex and Hampshire, working at St. Richard's Hospital, Chichester, and Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. The post-holder will join a well-established team within the Maxillofacial Unit at St. Richard's Hospital, providing a comprehensive Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Service. They will contribute to caring for a large cohort of Oral and Maxillofacial patients with complex multi-disciplinary needs. The post-holder will contribute to teaching junior Oral and Maxillofacial staff, nursing staff and take an active part in developing the Oral and Maxillofacial service in line with local needs.
The Maxillofacial Unit staff at St. Richard's Hospital, comprises of seven Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons who undertake the full range of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in addition to head and neck surgical dermatology. The department also leads the Thyroid and Parathyroid surgery service at St. Richard's Hospital and major Head and Neck surgical oncology is undertaken in Portsmouth.
There is also one Specialist Doctor, four Specialty Doctors, two Specialist Registrars on the HEKSS & Wessex rotation, and six dental core trainees attached to the unit.
There are three Consultant Orthodontists and a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry.
Main duties of the job
Head and Neck Cancer Services
Initial clinics and diagnostic assessments for Head and Neck cancer are managed at St Richard's Hospital, while operations are performed jointly with a skilled and dynamic team at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. Together, they provide a wide range of Head and Neck surgical procedures, including microvascular tissue transfer.
Queen Alexandra Hospital is the main site of Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, delivering excellent care to approximately 675,000 residents across Portsmouth and South East Hampshire, as well as to many patients beyond the region. The hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art theatres and diagnostic facilities.
An average of over 1,300 cases per year are discussed at the Head and Neck Multidisciplinary Meeting, including 326 new thyroid cases in 2024, with similar figures expected in 2025.

The job plan will be tailored to the individual appointed. There will be new patient and follow-up clinics and operating in main theatres and the day surgery unit.
On Call Commitment: The on-call commitment is 1:5, and based at St. Richards Hospital, Chichester. On rare occasions, when a patient cannot be transferred, the post-holder may have to provide emergency support out-of-hours at Worthing Hospital. The second on-call support is shared between the Trusts own Registrars and Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.
