University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279)

Senior CF in ICM with special interest in Transthoracic Echocardiology

The closing date is 28 December 2025

Job summary

Day-to-day care of patients on the adult neurosurgical and general Critical Care units. Full-time including participation in a full shift rota system (48 hours per week).

Applications are invited for appointment to Senior Clinical Fellow with specialist interest in Echocardiography (Post CCT, (certificate of completion of training) or within six months of CCT) for a Fixed Term period from February 2026 for 12 months.

The post is solely based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

This is an excellent opportunity for those who are looking to increase their experience in a busy tertiary intensive care unit and gain qualifications and experience in echocardiography post CCT.

This is a fantastic opportunity to train in echocardiography and we can support accreditation in FUSIC Heart, and both BSE Level 1 and 2. Posts can be extended up to 2 years for BSE Level 2 completion with mutual agreement. It is anticipated that about 40% of daytime activity will be protected for training in echocardiography on both the intensive care and in/outpatient echocardiography lists. An individualised schedule of echo sessions will be agreed after appointment of a successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

  • The Critical Care trust doctor must ensure that patients are managed in a timely and appropriate way in all aspects of critical care: resuscitation, stabilisation, working diagnosis, adequate monitoring, treatment, and discharge.
  • Proficient in detailed handover of complex patients.
  • Prompt assessment of the critically ill patients referred to ICU, work closely with the Outreach Team, reviewing and manage unstable patients on the ward.
  • The trainees will participate in the daily consultant ward round and review all admissions.
  • Coordinate and evaluate the suitability for admission to ICU in consultation with the ICU Consultant.
  • Adequate documentation.
  • Communicate regularly with patients' relatives.
  • Identifying patients suitable for discharge and liaise with ward teams.
  • Attendance and participation in the critical care teaching (lectures, journal club presentations, M&M, Clinical Governance)
  • Other areas of management can be arranged, based on the trainee's achieved competencies and requirements.
  • Complying with UHSx infection and patient safety guidelines
