Royal Sussex County Hospital -Imaging Department
The opportunity has arisen to recruit Band 3 HCAs to join our friendly team in the Radiology Department.
We have 6 Band 3 roles available. If you don't have all the essential criteria needed you may be asked to join as a Band 2 and be uplifted to a Band 3 once you have met the requirements (usually after 6 months).
You will be required to assist qualified nurses, radiographers and radiologists in giving a high standard of quality care to our patients and will support the team in the smooth running of the department. You will be required to work as part of the multidisciplinary team, maintaining a professional and caring manner. You must be experienced in coordinating lists / clinics / procedure planning and working with multidisciplinary teams. You must have good IT skills and be able to learn new speciality-specific systems.
Previous experience in a Radiology Department is desirable but not essential.
Full Time hours will likely be varied shift patterns of 11.5 hours and 7.5 hours between 8am to 8pm. You will be rota'd through multiple modalities which will include, MRI, CT, Ultrasound, X-ray Interventional radiology including the recovery and co-ordinating of urgent bookings.
Main duties of the job
- To actively and safely participate as a member of the Imaging team and contribute towards the smooth and efficient running of the department.
- To assist the nurses, sonographers, radiographers and radiologists in giving individualised care to the patients and managing patient flow effectively
- To give excellent service to patients with respect and compassion, supported by effective communication and patient focused care skills.
This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route however sponsorship can only be provided where applicants meet the specific requirements set by UKVI, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds, and any role-specific criteria. Applicants for the Senior HCA role must be able to evidence a minimum of 2 years' experience in the same role (Band 3 HCA within the NHS) to meet the salary requirements to qualify for sponsorship.
For this role it is essential that you have previous NHS or NHS primary care experience with a Care Certificate from an Ofqual regulated awarding organisation. Or that you are an internationally educated nurse/midwife/doctor who has worked in an acute hospital setting within recent years with evidence of your degree verified by an ENIC report.

- To support the Imaging team by supervising the safe deployment of staff and co-ordinating clinics by using excellent communication skills, liaising with multidisciplinary teams.
- To assist inpatient and day case patients and radiologists during interventional ultrasound guidance procedures such as liver biopsy, ascitic drainage, etc.
- To assist radiologists and advanced practitioner radiographers during fluoroscopy procedures, ensuring smooth running of the lists, care and preparation of the patients, liaison with wards, preparation of the room and tidying and appropriate cleaning after procedures.
- Correctly identifying and preparing patients for the range of invasive procedures
- Implement patient safety checks before invasive procedures to ensure the correct preparation of patients prior to their procedure. i.e. checking blood results, fasting status, baseline observations, clotting profiles and relevant medical history
- To escalate anomalies from the safety checks promptly to the radiologist or registered nurse in order to enable timely correction or re-scheduling of procedure
- To accurately monitor and record a patients vital signs post procedure, checking and documenting vital signs to Trust standard and reporting anomalies to a registered nurse or radiologist
- Provide direct nursing care to patients recovering from imaging procedures, caring for them physically with attention to activities such as intake of food and drink, toileting, getting dressed and assisted mobility
- To welcome and maintain effective communication with patients and relatives, explaining procedures, giving accurate advice during recovery and post-discharge
