University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279)

Consultant with an interest in Neuroanaesthesia

The closing date is 10 November 2025

Job summary

University Sussex Hospitals are looking for an outstanding Neuroanaesthetic consultant to join our team working in a fantastic area of the country. Our anaesthetic department is dynamic and has an excellent reputation for teaching, research and innovation for the benefit of our population. The successful applicants will have the opportunity to hone and expand their clinical skills in addition to developing services within University Hospitals Sussex and our partner organisations.

This is a new post, arising because of the expansion of neurosurgical and interventional neuroradiology services provided by our relocation to the Louisa Martindale Building in 2023. It will expand the Neuroanaesthetic Team to 12 specialists providing anaesthesia for neurosurgical, spinal and interventional neuroradiology in the Trust's new, state-of-the-art 3Ts Neurosciences Centre. We offer a mixture of specialist neurosurgical lists, neuroradiology and flexible general anaesthetic work, and any new post holder would become an equal participant in our existing teams. Additional skills and experience in other areas of expertise for the wider department, such as regional anaesthesia, would be welcomed.

Visiting our departments prior to interview is encouraged, and if unfamiliar with the hospital, contact with the clinical leads or clinical director prior to application would also be welcomed.

Main duties of the job

Due to the nature of the work undertaken, considerable experience in the delivery of anaesthesia for a wide range of intracranial, neuroradiological and spinal procedures is expected, as well as familiarity with the specialist monitoring these patients can require. As an expanding service, there are plenty of opportunities for leading service development and quality improvement projects and experience/enthusiasm for these areas would be welcomed.

We are large teaching department with an associated medical school so we expect all consultants to participate in the education and training of medical and non-medical colleagues. Those with a proven track record of delivering education to these groups will find plenty to occupy themselves.

Further details of the duties of the role can be obtained by contacting the clinical lead or clinical director.
