Trust Doctor ST4+ in Neonatology

Job summary

This post is an opportunity for doctors with an interest in Neonatology, fixed term12 months on our busy Neonatal unit and PRH Special Care Baby Unit, to cover for maternity. We are looking for an enthusiastic doctor to join existing team. You will be involved on our rolling on-call rota based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital(s) and will have equal access to training opportunities. Post-holders will need to be enthusiastic to learn and be involved in all aspects of work and expected to contribute to the department's research activities which are regionally renowned. The department will support all attempts to be involved or initiate research projects to completion.

It is ideally suited to candidates wishing to work in a large teaching hospital which provides many specialist services, ideal for anyone wishing to pursue a career in neonates.

They will participate a rolling full shift rota at Tier 2 and be involved in covering all aspects of inpatient care including long day ward cover and night shifts. This will involve delivering care to babies in the intensive care, high dependency and special care areas. In addition there will opportunities to take part in departmental audit and governance projects.

Applicants should have established skills in Neonatal Medicine and experience in paediatric outpatient follow up. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

Main duties of the job

Training and educational objectives for this post:

Fellow posts do not have Royal College approval for training purposes but do have educational approval from the Deanery. The Fellows work in an identical pattern to the NTN trainees and participate fully in the training programme.

All trainees have a nominated clinical and educational supervisor and together devise an appropriate educational program. This includes attendance at all regular departmental meetings including Journal Club, Perinatal Morbidity and Mortality meetings and Grand Rounds.

Clinical responsibilities:

  1. To advance competence in the advanced management of medical and surgical problems in newborn infants of any gestation and to approach being ready to work in a more senior role.
  2. To develop skills in neonatal outpatient management
  3. To gain experience of counselling parents with anticipated perinatal medical problems under consultant supervision
  4. To refine advanced neonatal resuscitation skills
  5. To enhance understanding of paediatric imaging.
  6. To understand the principles involved in safe Neonatal Transport

Teaching responsibilities:

  1. To develop teaching skills with the multidisciplinary neonatal team
  2. Delivering departmental teaching in the form of Case Presentations or Journal Club
