Job summary

We are looking to appoint an individual who is an outstanding clinician and surgeon. The role is that of a Cardiac Surgeon dealing with all aspects of Adult Cardiac Surgery (with the exception of transplantation and GUCH surgery). We specialise in a wide variety of conditions and pathology and perform a broad range of surgical procedures including minimal access cardiac surgery. We are looking for a surgeon with an interest in helping with the development of our mitral valve surgery programme.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

Theatre work (operating 2 lists per week)

Outpatient clinic work (1 OPD per week)

Ward rounds

CICU rounds

MDT attendance

Patient care and administration

Teaching and education

On-call commitment (non-resident): currently 1 in 5

To provide a clinical Cardiac Surgical service for patients at the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. As a tertiary service, with referrals coming from District General Hospitals in Sussex and South East England, the delivery of outreach services such as clinics or MDT meetings will be required.

The clinical service consists of all aspects of elective and emergency adult cardiac surgery with the exception of transplantation and congenital (GUCH) surgery.

To participate in clinical and other service activities with the objective of ensuring a high standard of patient care.

To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, audit and research.

To contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development.

  • FRCS/MRCS or its recognised equivalent.
  • Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the GMC or be eligible for registration within six months of the interview. o If you trained in the UK, you must also have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Cardiac Surgery or be within six months of receiving it by the interview date. o If you trained outside the UK, you must provide evidence that your qualifications are equivalent to the UK CCT.
