We are looking for an enthusiastic well-motivated Consultant colleague to join the dedicated team of physicians at the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Haywards Heath. University Hospitals Sussex hosts tertiary services in neurosciences, vascular surgery, neonatology, paediatrics, cardiac, cancer, renal, infectious diseases and HIV medicine. As a team committed to patient care, teaching, research, and innovation, we are seeking a passionate individual with expertise in Diabetes and Endocrinology to provide exceptional healthcare and make a significant impact on the lives of patients.
Main duties of the job
As a Consultant in Endocrinology, Diabetes and General Internal Medicine, you will play a crucial role in our team. Your responsibilities will include:o Providing expert clinical care to patients with endocrine conditions, both in an outpatient and inpatient setting.
oGeneral and specialist diabetes and endocrine clinics tailored according to interests and expertise.o Collaborating with our multidisciplinary diabetes and endocrine teamso Working with colleagues across specialities to develop pathways and provide multidisciplinary care.
o Participating in 1:4 rotational shared care of a diabetes/general medical ward.o Speciality consults and supervision of Speciality Registrarso 1:9 general medicine weekend, weekday and Bank holiday covero Supervising and mentoring junior medical staff, contributing to their development and training.o Contributing to audit, clinical governance and service developmento Support participation in research and clinical trialso Participating in departmental meetings, case presentations, and teaching sessions for medical students and doctors in training.

WorkloadThe job plan will be based on 10 PAs to include 8 DCC PAs and 2 SPAs.This also includes participation in a GIM Oncall rotaThe rota is formatted as Specialist week and GIM Ward Week.GIM On call commitments just carry through the year on a rotational basisDirect Clinical Care (DCC) 8 PAsSpecialist Week (Non-Ward Week):This usually has more Specialist Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic activities including more SPA time allocated during this week on an average.DCC includes general and specialist diabetes and endocrinology clinics, and participation in MDT or clinical supervision meetings (face-to-face or via TEAMS).Clinic templates generally allow 15-20 minutes for follow-ups and 30 minutes for new patients, with a 2:1 3:1 ratio.All Consultants provide clinical advice for members of the diabetes and endocrinology multi-disciplinary team. Other shared clinical duties include triage of referrals and our specialty Advice and Guidance service for GPs.All Consultants contribute to general endocrinology and diabetes clinics. There will be some flexibility about the allocation of sub-specialist work, depending on the interests and expertise of the appointee, but we would welcome contributions to any of the following sub-specialist areas of diabetes and endocrinology:1. Multidisciplinary diabetic foot clinics, working with our specialist colleagues in orthopaedics and vascular surgery.2. Community diabetes supervision.3. Antenatal diabetes clinics.4. Diabetes pump clinics including HCL.5. Pituitary MDT and MDT Neurosurgical pituitary clinics.6. Tier 4 Weight management Clinic at St Richards Hospital, Chichester.Ward week:Ward base is currently shared with Dynamic Elderly medicine team with patient numbers between 13- 20 patients depending on winter pressures. Ward has supplement of a IMT3 in medicine or Geriatric Specialty registrar, Renal Registrar(GIM rotation) and IMT3 in Diabetes and Endocrine Registrar on a rotational basis.Consultant is expected to provide Diabetes and Endocrine referral support for inpatients during their ward week outside their ward area frequently supported by diabetes and Endocrine registrars who conduct the Inpatient diabetes Ward rounds with diabetes nurses.On Call Commitment: 1:8, category B, 2% (subject to workforce review may reduce to category B, 1%)SPAs:Additional SPA information for this post: 0.5 SPA will be allocated for departmental meetings, and specific audit / clinical governance / patient safety work (e.g. audit, clinical governance, supporting Datix and SUI investigations, M&M meetings, learning from deaths, responding to complaints, contributing to Coroners inquests, NICE / GIRFT implementation, review and up-dating of specialty guidelines and protocols). 0.5 SPA will be allocated to specific roles in medical education and training (e.g. Clinical / Educational supervision of junior doctors, BSMS teaching, post-graduate teaching and training).One core SPA will be provided for individuals on a 10 PA job plan and for less than full-time individuals where UHSussex is the Designated Body for revalidation and appraisal purposes (for less than full-time employees whose Designated Body is not UHSussex, this will be pro rata to minimum 0.5 core SPA).
