Deputy Ward Manager / Charge Nurse

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a well established Stroke nursing team. As a deputy ward manager / charge nurse you will be responsible for essential day to day nurse in charge responsibilities and the smooth running of the shift in the absence of the ward manager. Managing a team of staff, ensuring staffing levels are safe / any concerns escalated, and carrying out essential audits will be part of a typical day. Dealing with incidents, complaints and managing a small team of staff are expectations of the role. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with enthusiasm and drive to join our experienced and diverse MDT. A hands on approach is vital to meet the needs of our patients. Good time management and communication skills are vital for this role. The role will also include being a Stroke bleep holder where you will be required to attend calls to assess patients in the acute phase of their Stroke, administering Tenactaplayse in patients who meet the Thrombolysis criteria. Full training will be given in this area and fully supported by our Stroke Specialist nurses.

The role is very diverse and each day can be very varied. Being able to multitask and think quickly to adapt to different situations is essential to the role. If you feel that you have the ability to work as part of a large MDT and have the necessary skills then we would love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

As a band 6 you will have junior management responsibilities. You will be supported by the ward manager and training / support given with managing a small group of staff. Appraisals, rota management, sickness management and dealing with complaints are aspects of the role alongside being a Stroke bleep holder. You will have the relevant clinical skills and competencies required at this level. Mentoring of students nurses is an important part of the role. Being able to prioritise, delegate and communicate effectively are important elements of the role. There are daily ward rounds which are Consultant led and you will be expected to participate in weekly MDT, escalating patient care to enhance flow and enable more effective discharge planning.
