Job summary

Do you wish to work in a facility where you will have the opportunity to enhance your specialist skills? If so, the Day Surgery Unit at Lewes is the place for you. We have rebuilt the service following our COVID closure and all lists are reopened and fully operating. The following specialities are currently operating here at Lewes, , Digestive Diseases, Vascular, Gynaecology, OMFS, Occuloplastics and Urology.

We cannot do this without you. We have surgeons and patients waiting.

The service runs Monday to Friday from 0700 to 2000. We are looking for an enthusiastic Band 5 Theatre Practitioner, Nurse or ODP to join our friendly, forward thinking team. Scrub experience is essential.

Our staff are multi skilled and can work in number of the following areas, Anaesthetics, Theatre, Pre op assessment, PACU and the Surgical Ward. Training and support within these areas is provided. This is a fast paced environment with a variety of areas and roles to experience. Every day is different.

The post holder will complete an orientation period to the clinical area in accordance with the Trust's induction programme. You will also be supported in your on going professional development.

We can offer a flexible working pattern within the Unit's opening hours.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide clinical support & teaching to all relevant personnel within the specialist area, including supervising and assessing learners in the work place.
  • To provide technical & clinical advise to relevant colleagues in the Day Surgery Unit and Pre-Operative Assessment.
  • To provide information & support to patients before, during and after surgery.
  • Willing to undertake training within the Perioperative setting either anaesthetics, scrub or recovery.
  • To provide & assist with the development of safe & high quality specialist patient care & to work within the guidelines of the Trust Nursing & Midwifery Strategy.

Job responsibilities

  1. Deputise for the Unit Manager /Senior Practitioner when required.
  2. Ensure that accurate records and information systems are maintained.
  3. Ensure the safe control, custody and administration of all drugs within the Unit in accordance with Trust Policies and national legislation.
  4. Assist the Unit Manager to ensure that clinical/nursing practices accurately reflect the departmental philosophy.
  5. Inform Senior Practitioner/Unit Manager if there is a change in circumstance, which may affect safe and competent practice.
  6. Assist the Senior Practitioner to actively lead in the development of their specialised areas within the Unit.
  7. Assist the Unit Manager to ensure self and others attend mandatory training sessions as required.
  8. Able to demonstrate relevant IT and keyboard skills to enable electronic data collection and communication.
  9. Effectively communicate with all disciplines, patients/clients and relatives.
  10. Ensure DATIX are completed and acted upon and the manager is informed accordingly.
  11. Assist the Senior Practitioners to effectively lead a multidisciplinary team under pressure in, at times, a highly stressful environment, including emergency situations as required.
  12. Ensure the security of the working area is maintained.
  13. Ensure the provision of a safe working environment for the staff, patients and visitors at all times in line with the Health and Safety at work act.
  14. Attend routine departmental meetings.
  15. Ensure adequate stock levels of consumables are maintained and order equipment and supplies as delegated.
