Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine

Job summary

Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine with 15-25% non-clinical time in:

Education, Research, Leadership, Ultrasound, Simulation, Trauma and Cesar training

(Please note that applicants will require 2 years of A&E and 4 years as a medical doctor in order to apply. If these requirements are not able to be met, please apply for junior Clinical Fellow post)

Posts are available from 06 August 2025 for 12 months fixed term.

Emergency Medicine is evolving rapidly. At RSCH and PRH we are ahead of the game with a team of dynamic and enthusiastic colleagues, exploring different ways of working and expanding our departments, services and staff. We are not the finished article, but in the UK, we are leading the way.

We treat 130,000 patients a year from Code Red polytrauma patients brought in by our HEMS doctors to patients with minor injuries. Our close links with Brighton and Sussex Medical School means you can also inspire new generations of doctors with the excitement of what we do.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

It is expected that the successful applicant(s) undertake full clinical duties on the Middle Grade Rota.

Responsible for all clinical aspects of Emergency work with 24/7 Consultant presence in the RSCH for advice

Responsible for all clinical and managerial aspects of Emergency work overnight in the PRH with the Consultant on-call from home within 30 minutes from the hospital site

1-in-3 weekend frequency as a maximum

1-in-8-night frequency as a maxim

Active participation in Teaching and supervising SHO Grade doctors.

Attendance in weekly 3-hour teaching sessions

The job plan will be based on 48 hours per week with 3 hours protected teaching time and 4 hours dedicated CPD time. This may be worked flexibly over a seven-day working week. This will be based on an annualised rota system. It is possible to choose an LTFT option with pro-rata annual leave and study leave allowances.

We offer non-clinical time for our fellows which can take up to 25% of their contracted time. The non-clinical time is to be spent focussing on the chosen special interest. The options include education, trauma, Cesar training ultrasound, simulation with plans to include further choices in the future. Experience and Qualifications

Essential

  • Basic Medical Degree
  • Completed a minimum of 2 years in Emergency Medical work and 4 years as a DR equivalent years' experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent

Desirable

  • Higher Degree
