Job summary
SHO Clinical fellow in Emergency Medicine with 25% non clinical time:
EducationResearchSimulationTraumaLeadership
Emergency Medicine is evolving rapidly. At UHS Eastern Sites (RSCH and PRH) we are ahead of the game with a team of dynamic and enthusiastic colleagues, exploring different ways of working and expanding our departments, services and staff. We are not the finished article, but in the UK, we are leading the way.
We treat 130,000 patients a year from Code Red polytrauma patients brought in by our HEMS doctors to patients with minor injuries. Our close links with Brighton and Sussex Medical School means you can also inspire new generations of doctors with the excitement of what we do.
We have 24/7 consultant/specialist grade delivered care and uniquely have found a way to make this sustainable. We self-roster with an annualised 42/52-week contract which allows flexibility as well as internal cover and compensation for shift overruns. We are developing a sustainable workforce able to enjoy delivering care not just now but also in 20 years' time. We welcome applications from those with interests outside the hospital clinical space, for example in pre-hospital medicine, research and education as our flexible rota can accommodate unusual rota patterns.
Main duties of the job
The year long posts (FT or LTFT) come with 25% dedicated non-clinical time to work on projects within the Emergency Department. Future projects could be tailored depending on personal career needs/interest/development of training after discussion with the lead for the ED Clinical Fellow programme.
Examples of current and previous Fellow projects:
- Education -(in conjunction with Brighton and Sussex Medical School).Direct supervision and teaching of 3rd and 5th year medical students both in the Emergency Department at RSCH and also at the Medical School mapped to their curriculum. Fellows who do a second year are eligible for a PG Cert in Medical Education.
- Simulation- in situ multidisciplinary simulation of Advanced/Code Red adult and paediatric trauma calls. 1:1 SPEED Emergency Medicine scenarios for SHO and SpR's. In situ simulation to 'stress test' equipment and pathways for paediatric emergencies. Designing and running simulation for ACCS/ HST regional training days to include a major incident MAJAX day. National and International conference presentations.
These posts can be less than full time or full time. Shifts are worked in an annualised way with flexible rostering using @healthrota software. Prior to starting in post doctors liaise with the rota team regarding the days they want off. The rotas are then built around their requirements as well as those of our patients.
The job description provides further examples.
About us
In addition, the rotas create efficient use of staffing so that there are not the fluctuations in numbers that happens with traditional templating systems. The three actually go hand in hand because we believe that if you improve staff welfare and job satisfaction then you improve patient care, all whilst improving efficiency. The rota works via a fundamentally different way of staffing doctors - via an annualisation system. Full allowance of annual leave, study leave and bank holidays (whether worked on bank holidays or not) are allowed for in the annualisation calculations. This calculates a set number of clinical shifts, which have to be worked over the year. This allows for greater flexibility than standard rosters. Weekend frequency is no more than 4 in 9 weekends but with compensatory time off during the week.
The full time jobs are 48 hours. 3 hours non-rostered time is included for work to include audit, quality improvement projects as well as traditional teaching.
These jobs are designed to support post-FY2 doctors to do clinical work but with non-clinical paid time to facilitate job sustainability and satisfaction. It is great for those wishing to take some time out after FY2 who want flexibility, stability, training, supervision, a study budget as well as GMC revalidation but do not yet want to commit to a training programme. They are also great for people who want to take some time out of a formal training programme where they have dedicated non-clinical time.
