Job summary

We are looking for people who are wanting to be part of our dynamic and caring Maternity Team and have the opportunity to make a positive difference to the women and people we care for.

A Maternity Care Assistants (MCAs) act as members of the care team working under the supervision and guidance of registered midwives/nurses, and other professional staff. MCA's, assist in the planning, implementation, evaluation and delivery of care, by providing support to registered staff, patients and their families. This will be achieved through the performance of specific care tasks, carried out after the successful programme of formal training and assessment.

Main duties of the job

  • Work closely with other members of the integrated team to facilitate the continuity of care thereby enhancing the patient experience.
  • Communicate verbally in an appropriate manner with colleagues, clients and relatives including situations where clients/relatives may be distressed.
  • Document clinical care in patient records maintaining an accurate and legible record in accordance with Trust policies and guidelines, under the responsibility of a registered midwife.
  • Prepare bed areas/rooms with the necessary equipment prior to the arrival of a woman to the ward e.g. drip stand, catheter holder.
  • Ensure that rooms/bed areas, lockers are emptied following discharge or transfer of the woman (and her baby) from the ward.
  • Answer telephone, door and patient call bells.
  • Assist with the serving of patient meals and drinks.
  • Contribute to the welcoming atmosphere within the unit.
  • Collect and transport specimens.
  • Collect blood from Blood bank following Trust policies and procedures.
  • Support women and people in the care and feeding of their babies

  • Help to reinforce Health Education advice to women.
  • Respect the need for privacy and dignity.
  • Remove urinary catheters and cannulas following appropriate training.
  • Empty catheter bags/bedpans and record output
