Job summary

  • The role is initially funded by Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals Charity (209414) as part of the new 'A Friend in Need' initiative, to support the end of life care of patients at the Royal Sussex County Hospital by starting an 'End of Life Care Volunteer' service.
  • To work in partnership with the hospital Palliative Care Team to manage a dedicated team of 'End of Life Care Volunteers' to provide ongoing support to patients at the end of life, their families and carers at Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.
  • To work in partnership with specialist End of Life charity, the Anne Robson Trust (1178352) to attract, recruit, train, and manage this team of 'End of Life Care Volunteers'.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To establish the End of Life care Volunteer service, supporting patients in the hospital who are approaching the end of their lives, their families and carers.

  • To attract, recruit, train, induct and retain a group of End of Life Care Volunteers, with the support of the Ann Robson Trust charity and the hospital Palliative Care Team.

  • To co-ordinate the day-to-day End of Life care Volunteer service in the hospital, working alongside the Palliative Care Team to identify patients who would benefit from Volunteer support.

  • To line manage and supervise the team of End of Life care Volunteers.

  • To ensure adequate cover and smooth running of the service during periods of absence.

Communication

  • To liaise daily with the Palliative Care Team and ward staff to ensure that all patients who have been identified as dying are referred to the End of Life Care Volunteer team if appropriate.

  • To establish good working relationships with clinical areas to identify and support their needs from the service.

  • To liaise with and build good working relationships with relevant stakeholders, including Charities, Chaplaincy and Bereavement Services, to ensure a smooth running service.

  • To liaise with funders Friends of Brighton and Hove Hospitals to support Public Relations and Fundraising initiatives for the End of Life Care Volunteer project, when requested.

  • Attend Supportive and End of Life care Group Meetings providing relevant updates and contribute to the general improvement of End of Life Care services.

  • To provide regular contact and support to End of Life Care Volunteers to encourage motivation and loyalty and ensure that their role is valued.

  • To provide and make record of supervision sessions with each member of the End of Life Care Volunteer team, at least once every four shifts.

  • Provide emotional and pastoral support to the team of End of Life Care Volunteers and implement a Buddy system whereby they support each other.

  • Receive and process queries and manage both personal and volunteer e-mail accounts.

Service Delivery and Improvement

  • Maintain accurate data collection and produce monthly and annual reports on service activity.

  • Attend relevant meetings, present and lead discussions and raise the profile of the End of Life Care Volunteer service.

  • Run quarterly audits to ensure that all End of Life Care Volunteers are covering a minimum of two shifts per month and are providing correctly completed feedback forms every time they visit a patient.

People Management and Development

  • Take part in regular recruitment events to aid recruitment to ensure that there is a fair representation from all local communities.

  • Judgement and decision making on recruitment of volunteers, ensuring that appropriate checks and assessments are undertaken in conjunction with Voluntary Services and recruitment.

  • Where the candidate does not demonstrate they are able to perform the role according to agreed criteria including personal availability, liaise with Voluntary Services to consider re-assigning the candidate to a more suitable role where possible.

  • Lead on the arrangement of appointments for interviews so that the individual is made aware if they have progressed to the next stage of the recruitment process.

  • To liaise with Voluntary Services Manager to ensure that all volunteers and staff are aware of the Trusts policies and guidelines relating to volunteering and that risk assessments are undertaken by departments, relating to information governance and safeguarding.

  • Organise and deliver End of Life Care Volunteer training, ensuring that all mandatory requirements are met and regularly updated.

  • To work in partnership with the Anne Robson Trust, to identify additional specialist training requirements of Volunteers and coordinate the delivery of relevant training on an ongoing basis.

  • Provide on-going support for volunteers, monitoring placements to ensure effective employment and job satisfaction and making accurate records of this information.

  • Ensure a healthy, safe and secure working environment, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, maintaining accurate documentation and reporting any concerns.

  • Intervene at initial stages of conflict, grievances and complaints and manage as appropriate, reviewing Volunteer placements where problems arise, and arranging transfer, redeployment, or effective dismissal in conjunction with Line Manager, Voluntary Services and in line with the Trust Volunteer policy.
