Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen at University Hospitals Sussex for a motivated, experienced therapy radiographer who is looking to develop their career within Education and Development. We are seeking a Practice Educatorto lead on the strategy and implementation plan to develop a workforce (present and future) which has the capabilities and capacity to meet the workforce challenges within Radiotherapy.

Radiotherapy provision for Sussex is currently provided across two hospital sites, Brighton and Eastbourne. There are CT Philips Widebore facilities and two Elekta versa HD machines sited at Eastbourne, a further matched CT, two Elekta Linacs at the Royal Sussex in Brighton and Two Tomotherapy machines, opened in 2016 in Preston Park, Brighton. High Dose Rate brachytherapy facility in Brighton at the Cancer Centre.

Main duties of the job

Working collaboratively with the Head of Radiotherapy postholder acts as the Lead for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Education across all radiotherapy sites to ensure that all national, regional local policies and procedures affecting undergraduate and postgraduate Radiotherapy education are complied with, the HEI best practice are delivered and the required local, regional and national educational standards met.The post holder is responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate education and the development of an apprenticeship programme and T-Grade learning across all radiotherapy sites. The postholder is responsible for the professional development of the therapy radiography staff and to develop CPD opportunities, statutory and mandatory training, competency frameworks and documents to record and support lifelong learning. The postholder is responsible for the development, supported learning and integration of international recruits. The postholder is responsible for the preparation, presentation and co-ordination of education workshops to inform and disseminate relevant developments to the radiotherapy staff and wider multidisciplinary team across all treatment sites. Based at The Royal Sussex County Hospital, will include attendance at all linked sites. A flexible approach to work is essential to meet the service needs of the department and hours of work may vary between 8am-7pm with some occasional Saturday and Bank Holiday.

Communication

  • Act as a source of expertise and guidance to the Head of Radiotherapy with respect to developing new opportunities and projects.
  • Design and deliver programmes of work liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop effective and collaborative working relationships with colleagues within the Trust and other organisations, supporting and sharing best practice.
  • Escalating concerns, risks and issues through the appropriate routes and following through on actions as required.
  • Foster effective and supportive relationships with the Head of Radiotherapy Clinical teams and external stakeholders to enable delivery of strategy and objectives in relation to the entire Radiotherapy Education portfolio
  • Develop strong and supportive working relationships with Divisional clinical and operational teams, and corporate teams
  • Promote, negotiate and facilitate change and, at times, work with and empower multi-disciplinary teams within the service to deliver agreed outcomes
  • Be able to present clear and comprehensive updates, reports and information in a variety of methods
  • Participate in performance review and delivery meetings with the Head of Radiotherapy
  • Take responsibility for personal and professional development and practice, recognising own limitations and the need for continuing education.
  • Ensure that there are robust systems and processes for the development, tracking and reporting of projects.

Service Delivery and Improvement

  • Support the Head of Radiotherapy for the delivery of the agreed service education and developments plan, within and external to the organisation.
  • The post holder will be required to maintain advanced theoretical and practical knowledge, evidenced by keeping up to date with best practice locally and nationally and contribute to the implementation of evidence based clinical practice.
  • The post holder will act as an authorised signatory for financial payments regarding the training and development expenses.
  • The post holder will contribute to the drawing up of service training budgets.
  • They will manage the equitable access of training funds to staff and liaise with the trust to gain access to external training resources.
  • Attend mandatory training updates as required, this will include statutory skills for clinical staff and all radiotherapy-specific skills required to perform the role of a Service Manager
  • Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with the line manager as part of the personal development process.
  • Achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.
  • Identify own learning needs and jointly plan training requirements with your line manager
