Job summary

The Sussex Cardiac Centre in Brighton is continuing to expand and this is an exciting opportunity for you to join our dynamic and professional team.

We are an acute 11 bedded Cardiac Surgical Stepdown Unit, in a Tertiary Cardiac Centre. We provide excellent quality care to patients, pre and post cardiac surgery.

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic nurse to join our friendly professional team.

Previous or current cardiac experience would be helpful and you will be working with our team in delivering the highest standards of nursing care.

If you are keen to develop professionally, you will benefit from the many educational and developmental opportunities available, along with the support of our cardiac surgery practice educator.

We welcome applications from those who currently hold a UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will work as part of the team to provide an effective, safe environment of care for individual patients before and after cardiac surgery as well as patients' relatives and carers.
  • The post holder is also responsible and accountable for the total nursing care of patients allocated to them for each shift under the supervision of a charge nurse.

Job responsibilities

Patient Care Delivery

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of non-invasive cardiac monitoring and provides appropriate care for the patient. Ensures safety and working order of all bedside equipment whilst setting alarm parameters where possible.
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates individualised evidenced based patient care for patients undergoing surgery both pre and post operatively by utilising and sufficiently maintaining care pathways, care plans and other relevant documentations.
  • Basic understanding of ECGs and able to recognise life threatening arrythmias. Able to perform 12 lead ECG analysis.
  • Effectively and efficiently manage own workload, prioritising care provided.
  • Administers medications safely (oral/IV/Via NGT/IM/SC) and accordingly within the Trusts policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for wound assessment and dressing application seeking guidance from tissue viability nurse if indicated.
  • Able to care and look after patients with chest drains, epicardial pacing wires, central lines, pericardial drains, redivacs, NG tubes, VAC dressings and PICO dressings.
  • With the support of senior nurses, is able to deal with distressing or emotional circumstances.
  • Proven ability to take the clinical lead or participate effectively and safely in the management of an emergency situation.
  • Ensures a holistic approach is adopted when administering care to patients.
