Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist in Major Trauma

Job summary

The Royal Sussex County Hospital is part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. We provide acute services to the general populations in Brighton and Hove and in Mid Sussex and more specialist and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the south coast of England, including being one of the Major Trauma Units along the South East Coast.

We are looking for a forward thinking clinician who has substantial post-graduate experience, at Band 6 and 7 level including Neurology, Trauma and Orthopaedics.

Working within the Major Trauma, Orthopaedic and Vascular Team (MTVO), you will lead a team providing inpatient care to the Major Trauma ward including Critical Care at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. . You will also be involved in managing and taking part in the Major Trauma weekend service when commenced.

You will have opportunities to develop your clinical, managerial and teaching skills. You will be closely involved in the continued development of the Major Trauma, Orthopaedics and Vascular Physiotherapy service in conjunction with the other band 7's and Clinical Specialists.

There is a structured in-service training programme and the Physiotherapy Department supports the development of clinical and research interests, including funding for external courses. As an experienced member of the team you will provide mentorship and both clinical and non-clinical supervision to your peers, other Allied Health Professionals and students.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible and accountable for the operational management of the Major Trauma, Vascular and Orthopaedic Physiotherapy team by undertaking a clinical team leader role in planning, coordinating, delivering and evaluating the Major Trauma Physiotherapy Service on a day-to-day basis.
  • Provide professional clinical leadership as an advanced practitioner within the field of Major Trauma Physiotherapy.
  • Working as an autonomous practitioner, to carry a high clinical caseload of highly complex patients providing specialist assessment and treatment within the Major Trauma.
  • Work in collaboration with Physiotherapists on Critical Care Neuro and Orthopaedics to ensure best practise is provided to all patients on the Major Trauma pathway including outliers. This includes the use of advanced clinical reasoning skills to highly provide specialist support to medical staff and other health professions.
  • Use professional and clinical leadership in the development and implementation of a comprehensive training and personal development plan for all physiotherapy staff (and other health professionals) across Major Trauma.
  • To be guided by National Standards where they exist to develop departmental policies with all Physiotherapy speciality areas.
  • To take a specialist lead role in the strategic planning, development and clinical governance of the Major Trauma physiotherapy service across the whole organisation.
  • Deputise for the Operational Lead Physiotherapist as required.

At RSCH we are a friendly in patient Physiotherapy Team of 50 plus members of staff. The Major Trauma Physiotherapy Team is comprised of 5 members of staff- who work alongside our OT , SALT and Dietetic Therapy colleagues.

We are work collaboratively with all other MDT members and are fortunate to have strong links with the Sussex Trauma Network and Neuroscience Speciality Division.

  • Solely responsible and accountable for the operational management of the Major Trauma, Vascular and Orthopaedic Physiotherapy team by undertaking a clinical team leader role in planning, coordinating, delivering and evaluating the Major Trauma, Vascular and Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Service on a day-to-day basis.
