Job summary
To have management responsibility for the Critical Care department which involves the efficient and effective use of resources. To ensure the highest standard of nursing care is delivered to all critically ill patients with the promotion of evidence based practice. To provide clinical/professional leadership in the care of critically ill patients to a team of nurses and be responsible for ensuring that they have continuous professional development and education, working in conjunction with the Critical Care Matron and Practice Educator. To act as a resource for the Trust staff with regard to care of the critically ill.

To be a role model and clinical expert within the critical care setting. To manage and team lead on a busy critical care unit. To manage a team of HCAs and nurses. To be responsible for their line management.

- The post holder has a responsibility to themselves and others in relation to managing risk, health and safety and will be required to work within the policies and procedures laid down by the Trust. All staff have a responsibility to access occupational health, other staff support services and/or any relevant others in times of need and advice.
- Complies with and promotes knowledge of health and safety regulations including safe and secure handling of medicines
- Challenges individuals who put themselves or others at risk.
- Participates in risk management for the clinical area, identifying, processing and monitoring work activities and practices making recommendations and reviewing action instigated and reporting at relevant meetings
- Ensures all incidents are reported and appropriately investigated. Public Interest Disclosure policy is adhered to.
- Follows the Trusts Bed Management Policy
- Arranges for safe and prompt admission of patients following acceptance by ICU Cons maximising occupancy whilst ensuring safety.
- Implements the Critical Care Admission Flow Chart for patient admission when Unit deemed full.
- To be competent with, and have the ability to lead in the event of, respiratory/cardiac arrest, Major Incident or fire.
- Ensures that all staff are informed of changes to Local / Trust policies and procedures.
- Ensures that Sickness and Absence policy is followed, informing Team Leader and ensuring individuals use Occupational Health services appropriately.
