An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Medical Microbiology & Infectious disease to join our friendly and committed team in providing high-quality infection services at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, part of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.
The successful applicant will join a team of 2 other consultants, in the clinical microbiology service and 7 other consultants in the overall infection service with expertise across a broad range of areas including microbiology, infectious diseases, mycology, infection control, antimicrobial stewardship, OPAT and virology.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute and develop the Department of Microbiology & Infection, having a real say in the future travel and direction of the infection service at UHSussex. The department is closely linked to the Infectious Diseases unit at RSCH , accommodated in the recently completed state-of-the-art Louisa Martindale Building. The ID unit has recently been awarded the status of Specialist Regional Infectious Diseases Centre (SRIDC).
Main duties of the job
Duties include:
- Involvement in the management of patients with infections, through direct clinical liaison, bacteraemia and antimicrobial stewardship rounds
- Clinical ward duties on the ID unit.
- Review of patients referred to the weekly infectious disease outpatient clinic.
- The provision of a comprehensive infection service including advice regarding appropriate specimens and interpretation of results for transmission to clinicians and communication of urgent significant results to the clinicians providing relevant management advice.
- Take up a lead role in either in OPAT, antimicrobial stewardship, Infection Control or Departmental lead.
- Work with colleagues to develop, promote and monitor an antimicrobial stewardship programme for the Trust.
- Shared responsibility with the other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Trust on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues' periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- Provide clinical and educational supervision of junior medical staff with other consultant colleagues.
- Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
