Job summary

An exciting opportunity is now available in our busy Plaster Room in the Orthopaedic Outpatient Department at the Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. Cross site cover is a component of the role, as the Departments are located at both the Royal Sussex County Hospital and the Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre in Haywards Heath.

The post is a Band 5 position but we welcome applications from newly qualified or early career Orthopaedic Technicians, as this post is suitable as a Band 4 developmental role. Support and training would be provided to help the successful candidate obtain achievement of the Band 5 competencies, and upon this you will obtain a Band 5. We envisage this could be achieved within a six to twelve month time frame.

The individual needs to be enthusiastic, motivated and proactive. We embrace innovative thinking and are constantly looking at new ways to improve our service.

The candidate must be in possession of the accredited British Orthopaedic Casting Certificate (BCC) qualification, and be able to demonstrate evidence of ongoing personal development.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to provide a comprehensive service to the Adult Fracture and Outpatient Clinics, along with Paediatric Clinics and the Orthopaedic Wards. Experience of working with diabetic/podiatry patients, in terms of the application of total contact casts is essential.

You will be involved in all aspects of care of patients in plaster and will able to apply and remove a wide range of plaster /synthetic casts and orthotics without direct supervision.

The applicant must be familiar with aseptic techniques and able to clean and dress simple wounds and remove sutures, staples along with kirchner wires.

Candidates must have the ability to communicate effectively within our multidisciplinary team and also with our diverse local population .The applicant must be a skilled, confident caring individual. It is essential to be a team player, and committed to delivering a high standard of patient care.

The post holder will be expected to be flexible and have a "can do" attitude in ensuring the work of the department is carried out to a high standard.

On occasions it may be necessary for the individual to stay late in the department, this enables us to cover our clinical activity and is for the benefit of the patient, and the needs of our service. In return we allow the accumulated hours to be taken back at a convenient time.

  • British Orthopaedic Association Casting Certificate. Includes Glasgow Caledonian University Diploma or BOANC (British Orthopaedic Association of Nursing Certificate) diploma (to include casting experience)
  • Experience of working in adult and paediatric fracture clinics/theatres
  • GCSE/equivalent pass grades in English and mathematics
  • Have extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, fractures, orthopaedic conditions and be able to interpret x-rays to enable specific cast application
