Level 9A East is a 24 bedded Gastroenterology unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced band 5 Staff Nurse to become an integral part of a newly established gastroenterology team.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic, energetic Nurse with a 'can do' approach who can deliver a high standard of person centered care.

  • Deliver patient-centred nursing care on the ward aiming to achieve the highest possible standards of care delivery, in accordance with the Trust's Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery
  • Deputise in the absence of more senior nursing staff and undertake ward management duties as required
  • Promote best clinical and professional practice
  • Ensure efficient use of resources
  • Assist in the promotion of a conducive learning environment for all staff and students

Main duties of the job

We specialise in the care and treatment of patients with gastroenterological conditions, including, diseases of the Liver, Pancreas and Bowel. The successful candidate will work closely with the multi- disciplinary team in supporting acutely unwell patients.

We welcome informal visit to the ward prior to interview.

  1. Is responsible for the assessment, planning and implementation of care and assists in the interpretation of data relevant to the patient's condition and progress
  2. Assists in the identification of patient problems and needs with the patient, their carers, senior nursing staff and other staff as appropriate
  3. Identifies the priorities of care for patients
  4. Identifies realistic goals for patients in care plans
  5. Gives skilled care to patients and provides support to their carers
  6. Administers drugs and treatments as prescribed according to the NMC guidelines and the Trust's Guidelines for the Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines
  7. Changes care plans and goals according to evaluation and discussion with the multidisciplinary team

  • Participate in co-ordinating the activities for the whole ward area managing staff placement, sickness and absence and insuring safe placement of patients in the ward area
  • Organise time, equipment and staff to deliver nursing care. Delegate and assign activities and tasks appropriately
  • Act as an advocate for the patient/client ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services.
  • Effectively liaises with ward staff, clinical operations department, site management team, discharge lounge and other departments to allow timely management of patient throughput
  • Ensures that discharge review documentation is completed and reimbursement material is communicated to relevant body in timely fashion
  • Participates in ward rounds and other multidisciplinary meetings ensuring that concerns of patients are identified and met
