Job summary

We are excited to appoint to 2 new fixed term consultant neurologist posts at our sites in Worthing and Chichester for a period of 12 months

We are open to applicants with appropriate training in neurology but who may not be on the GMC specialist register for neurology

We are open to applicants seeking specialist registration via CESR or who may be open to a substantive specialist grade doctor post in the future.

The posts will be responsible for the Day-to-day care of Neurology inpatients and the running of outpatient clinics.

We expect there to be participation in the on call rota system working 1:13 (TBC)

These are new full time consultant post, resulting from increased demand for outpatient and inpatient neurological services.

The neurology service is provided:

  • at Worthing Hospital by three consultant neurologists, Dr Mirdhu Wickremaratchi, Dr Aren Okello and Dr Richard Chalmers
  • at St Richards by two consultant neurologist, Dr Kryshani Fernando and Dr Debie Alvares as well as a part time Associate Specialist, Dr Gin Moffitt

There are close working relationships within the neurology service across UHSussex including at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

In addition, there are neurology nurse specialists based at St Richard's and at Worthing Hospital. There are community-based nurse specialists for patients with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and motor neurone disease.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for neurological management of inpatients and outpatients at St Richards or Worthing Hospital, &for supervision at RSCH of St Richards/ Worthing patients referred for tertiary investigations & management as inpatients and via the Programmed Investigation Unit.

Duties will include:

To hold 3.5 general neurology outpatient clinics weekly. To share responsibility for any patient admitted directly under or transferred to the care of the neurology deptat RSCH.

To participate in the neurology dept's regular ward referral service. Currently the new post holder will see ward referral on 2-3 days per week, with other Consultants responsible for the other days.

To share responsibility for any patient admitted directly under or transferred to the care of the neurology dept.

To undertake domiciliary visits at the request of colleagues.

Responsibility for general professional training of the junior medical staff & contributing to the training of nurses and other staff, and participating in the activities of the PGMC including medical audit.

Administrative duties associated with the care of the patients, training, and running of the clinical department.

To undertake out of hours responsibility for the Sussex wide non-resident Neurology on call as per rota (1 in 13 approx - tbc)- more frequent than that currently
