Head of Nursing - Quality and Harm Free Care

Job summary

To provide leadership, development and delivery of the Quality Improvement and Harm Free Care workstreams. The post holder is responsible for developing and delivering quality programmes, using learning from clinical incidents and the experiences of patients. The overarching purpose of this role is to drive improvements and maintain safe, high quality and responsive services, meeting the needs and expectations of patients and the public and encompassing best practice in all settings.

Please note salary range is indicative of experience ranging from band 8a to 8b

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for developing Strategies for Harm Free Care
  • Provide strategic leadership for Harm Free Care Team
  • Accountable for service delivery, budget and line management responsibilities for the Harm Free Care Team services.
  • Produce reports for Trust Board, demonstrating compliance with statutory regulation,
  • Act as a clinical expert and as a resource for all staff relating to Safer care standards.
  • The post holder will be required to work both as part of the Corporate Nursing Team and autonomously providing expertise in relation to the implementation of initiatives and change management
  • .
  • Develop and initiate systematic quality improvement projects which genuinely improve the safety, effectiveness and experience of patients. (work closely with the Trust strategic Quality Improvement Team (Kaizen)).
  • Work as a member of Trust Senior nursing team, contributing to the operational performance of the organisation and service development.
  • Deputise for the Deputy Director of Nursing as required.
  • Continually scope opportunities for improving the quality of care, experience and outcomes for patients, developing close working relationships with our key partners in the local health and social care economy and ensuring that the Trust proactively engages with regional and national quality improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to the Trust's Manager on-call rota

  • Advise the trust and senior managers, interpret and where relevant apply/implement national policies, guidelines and initiatives relating to safe care.
  • Provide assurance and involve the Trusts members and Council of Governors in improving patient outcomes.
  • Analytical and Judgemental skills - (Factor 3)
  • Create an environment that drives excellence in the provision of safe, effective standards of care with patient experience at its heart.
  • Working with ward staff using the patient first improvement system and quality improvement methodology to develop local action plans aiming at reducing harm for patients.
  • Oversee the NHS surveillance processes in relation to Harm Free Care, monitoring the data down to ward level to identify any areas for improvement.

  • Use Advanced Root Cause analysis skills to supports staff to fully understand the root causes of problems.

  • Contribute to the production of the Quality Strategy and Quality Account; identify and review quality priorities relating to Harm Free Care to support the delivery of the Trusts quality strategy.
  • Contribute to the production of the Trust Nursing Strategy with responsibility for development of Quality Improvement programmes.
  • Collaborative working with Divisional Teams to identify quality goals and successfully implement improvement projects.
  • Provide written and verbal reports each month for the Harm Free Care, Patient Safety Group, Quality and Patient Safety Group, and Heads of Nursing Meetings.
  • Provide Harm Free Care Section of the Integrated Board Report and data relating to work streams and develop and prepare Trusts Annual Quality Report for submission to monitor.

  1. Financial and Physical Development (inc equipment, stock etc) - (Factor 8)
  • Budget Holder for the Harm Free Care cost centres.
  • Participate in budget setting and facilitate the effective and efficient use of the Harm Free Care budget.
  • Contribute to the Trusts cost improvement and efficiency programmes through scoping for opportunities to work differently, ensuring the most effective use of resources.
