Job summary

We are looking for a creative and forward thinking Occupational Therapist to work in the Rehabilitation and Step down Unit based in Newhaven. The Unit is part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust and we have 34 beds for patients transferred to us for further rehabilitation to improve function, promote independence and prevent the risk of further deconditioning as a result of their hospital stay.

Our inpatients often have complex presentations and may be frail elderly, with medical, surgical or orthopaedic co-morbidities. They may have had traumatic experiences such as falls with a long lie, and may have issues with fear of further falls and loss of confidence. They may also have cognitive decline and reduced capacity, and require thorough assessment of this and their home and social circumstances to inform the discharge plan and process.

The Newhaven Team consists of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Rehabilitation Assistants as well as the Medics, Nurses, Health Care Assistants, and a Flow Coordinator. All the team work closely together with an integrated approach to deliver high standard of care and to facilitate our patients' assessment, treatment and discharge planning.

We are keen to expand our inpatient rehab program at the Unit and so there will be an opportunity to work both one to one with individual patients and also develop group programmes as needed.

Main duties of the job

To work independently as an autonomous practitioner by providing specialist assessment and intervention to individuals presenting with a range of physical, cognitive, social or perceptual deficits which impact on functional ability and safety within their home environment, using an evidence based and person-centred approach.

To ensure a proactive approach to rehabilitation to maintain and improve function and to facilitate timely discharges always thinking 'Home First'

To work closely with Physiotherapy colleagues, as well as the wider multi-disciplinary team. This will involve providing both formal and informal clinical support where necessary.

To provide supervision and leadership for relevant junior and senior members of staff and students on practice placement.

To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of Occupational Therapy Services within a designated specialist team.

This role requires you to liaise with many different teams, external agencies, families and NOK so excellent communication skills are essential. You should be highly motivated to work with this patient group, and be able to work sensitively and flexibly, and treat people with the respect and dignity they deserve.

To participate in a 7-day rota including bank holiday and weekend cover as required.

We would be prepared to consider a Band 5 to 6 development post, if at interview, you are the best candidate but it is agreed you need a period of time to sign off your Band 6 competencies
