Specialist Upper Gastrointestinal Oncology Dietitian

Job summary

This is an exciting brand new position for a Band 6 dietitian to join our Upper Gastro-Intestinal Cancer Specialist Team . This is a new and developing team working together to ensure we are supporting patient's nutritional needs through their cancer pathway from diagnosis to living with and beyond cancer. This post will initially be on a fixed term basis for two years, but with firm plans to develop it into a substantive post. You will receive training and support alongside the other specialist team members to help provide seamless care for our cancer patients.

Main duties of the job

Work as a key, valued and active member of the Upper GI Multidisciplinary and dietetic teams.

Work alongside our oncology dietitians and advanced Upper GI dietitian to provide a nutrition and dietetic service to our upper GI cancer patients from diagnosis, prehabilitation , post-surgery and oncological treatment to best supportive care.

See patients face to face in our outpatient departments, chemotherapy day unit and radiotherapy unit at the Sussex Cancer Centre

Provide training to undergraduate dietitians , supervising their clinical placements

Work collaboratively with the MDT and dietetic teams across University Hospitals Sussex and colleagues in our other partnered trusts, to ensure patients pathways of care are managed seamlessly and in line with local, regional and national guidelines.

Participate in continuing professional development, audit and research within this specialist area to further best practice and personal development.

Job responsibilities

  • To work autonomously, undertaking nutritional needs assessments for this patient group and to develop individual patient centred treatment plans based on nutritional diagnoses including: clinical condition, anthropometrics, biochemistry, diet history and oncology treatment plans.
  • To attend, actively contribute to and lead nutritional decision-making discussions at the UGI Specialist MDT, to ensure the delivery of expert nutritional care to patients from diagnosis and throughout treatment within the surgical and oncology settings.
  • To work with the UGI MDT, Brighter Outlook and other holistic cancer services to develop and implement a prehabilitation service for surgical patients and those embarking on neo-adjuvant chemotherapy and oncological treatments to optimise planned treatments.
  • To act as a specialist dietitian for UGI cancers to provide expert opinion on appropriate practice and alongside the band 7 advanced dietitian facilitate service development opportunities. This will include reviewing current literature, national guidelines & research in the specialist area and disseminating the findings to the UGI team members and dietetic colleagues to support the provision of evidence-based, up-to-date patient care.
  • To utilise specialist knowledge and clinical expertise to assess patients nutritional requirements based on complex clinical conditions and treatment plans to develop, implement and communicate with the client and the MDT the dietetic care plan.
  • To be clinically responsible for the nutritional care of the UGI surgical patients and those manage with oncological treatments and independently plan, organise and prioritise patient activity and professional demands.
  • To diagnose malnutrition and /or risk of refeeding syndrome and liaise with the MDT with an aim of optimising treatment outcomes by recommending the appropriate methods of nutrition intervention.
  • To recommend appropriate forms of artificial nutrition support and enteral feeding regimens for patients and manage, monitor and re-evaluate throughout the treatment plan adapting to the clinical condition as necessary.
  • To maintain clear and accurate patient records in trust-based databases including Somerset Cancer Register and CareFlow, and to communicate in clinical decisions and outcomes in writing to the patient, primary care teams, palliative care services and other specialist care providers as required.
