Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Senior Research Midwife with extensive experience in clinical research to join our clinical trials team based across University Hospitals Sussex. This exciting position will provide the ideal opportunity to combine clinical research skills with research managerial and leadership skills.

The post holder will be overseeing a broad portfolio of maternity clinical trials across four hospitals. In addition they will deliver their own portfolio of studies. The post-holder will provide expert midwifery care to patients who participate in research, supporting them in their decision-making to participate in trials, strict protocol adherence, data collection, and organisation of relevant tests and procedures. The post holder will also be responsible for promoting research within Trust departments and supporting colleagues and local investigators to deliver high quality research activity to support patient care. The role requires flexibility and the ability to work as a team member and under own direction.

Applicants with extensive experience in clinical research midwifery will be considered. Leadership/managerial experience will be an advantage.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of a clinical research midwifery team across all four maternity units within UH Sussex (Brighton, Haywards Heath, Worthing & Chichester). Coordinating, implementing, and running research studies within these maternity departments.
  • The post holder will grow, manage and oversee a portfolio of non-commercial and commercial clinical research studies, working closely with Principal Investigators and clinical staff.
  • Shares responsibility for development and management of clinical research across the organisation.
  • Provide professional midwifery leadership and support at departmental level and to clinical research midwives across divisions and collaborate with the senior nursing/midwifery managers to enhance nursing and midwifery practice and strategy.
  • Act as a role model and clinical expert at departmental level ensuring high standards of care and safety of research participants, ensuring appropriate cover and skill mix for smooth running of research projects.
  • Provides specialist education and training to staff and students.
  • Deputises for Lead/Head Research Nurses as required.
