Job summary

We are looking for 1 new GP colleague to join our friendly, supportive department, based in Brighton, Level 8, Louise Martindale Building, at Royal Sussex County Hospital.

This job involves assessing & managing patients in our Rapid Access Clinic for Older People (RACOP). We have funding for between 2 & 10 sessions of work per week. We can be flexible around days worked & if you work more than 4 clinical sessions, we would also offer 1-2 sessions of time to support other professional activities (i.e supervision, teaching and service development).

UHS is an exciting place to work, with our department due to move into the new Louisa Martindale in June 2023, & the Trust's recent merger to form University Hospitals Sussex, with all the opportunities that brings. RACOP is undergoing a transformation as part of the move. We aim to develop multidisciplinary Same Day Emergency Care for older people, alongside our existing model which generally sees a variety of older patients between 2-7 days post referral. Our service already offers same day diagnostic imaging & blood tests along with nursing support & Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment for our patients. Some of our triaging & consultations are done by telephone, but mostly we see patient face-to-face.

We operate a hybrid rota & can accommodate full or less than full time working.

As an academic department we support research and innovative projects, such as Small Acts of Friendship, which has gained national attention.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

  • Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment of patients in the Rapid Access Clinic for Older People
  • Triage of referrals for RACOP
  • Follow up of investigations from patients seen in RACOP where required

The non-clinical duties/supporting professional activity (SPA) of the post could include (dependent on the interests of candidate):

  • Engagement in Shared Leadership of the department via weekly leadership meetings
  • Participation in clinical governance, service improvement and audit, this is supported by the safety and quality team within the Trust
  • Clinical supervision of trainee doctors
  • Keeping up to date with knowledge and skills via CPD
  • Engagement with yearly appraisal and revalidation (this is well supported by the medical appraisal and revalidation (MAAR) team in the trust)
