Are you looking for a dynamic post in a busy Theatre Admissions Unit? Are you passionate about delivering outstanding care to pre-operative and post operative patients, working within a small, multiskilled team?

This post requires someone with excellent communication skills, who would like to develop their career in surgical nursing, supporting patients through complex elective and emergency surgery?

The post holder will be able to gain skills in pre-operative assessment, second stage recovery and safe, nurse led discharge of day case patients.

This post welcomes applicants that are newly qualified.

Main duties of the job

The team in the Theatre Admission Unit, (TAU), are forward thinking, and keen to develop new ways of working in this small, although dynamic team. Diversity is respected and encouragement is given for learning and development. The TAU has a dedicated Practice Development Nurse that supports education and progression in the unit.

You will have the opportunity to complete your Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor training, as well as completing competencies to achieve the necessary clinical and leadership skills.

  • Identify and promote evidence based clinical practice, ensuring patient centred care and best practice is delivered, whilst working within the Trusts policies, guidelines and standards.
  • Complete patient assessment, pre and post operatively to plan individual care accordingly to the patient groups diverse and complex needs.
  • Promote the health and well-being of patients.
  • Maintain effective communication with the team regarding routine and daily activities, ensuring documentation is timely and accurate.
  • Educate patients to enable a safe and effective admission and discharge.
  • Support learners in the department, working with student nurses, Trainee Nurse Associates and Registered Degree Nurse Apprentices
  • Emulate the Trusts values and behaviours, role modelling to staff, patients and wider teams.
  • Support change within the department and division.

Communication

  • Work collaboratively within TAU and theatres to promote best practice.
  • Is competent in skills related to pre and post-operative care, effectively interpreting and communicating information to colleagues and patients where appropriate.
  • Have good interpersonal, communication and team skills, liaising with patients and relatives, networking with other healthcare professionals and specialists, interpreting and sharing detailed and complex information.
  • Maintain accurate and relevant clinical notes and documentation, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to information governance and the Data Protection Act is maintained. A full and accurate record of relevant information is documented in patients records.
  • Attend routine departmental and occasionally speciality team meetings, network with practitioners and disseminate information to relevant staff in the division.
  • Assist the team leader to ensure the effective induction and orientation of new staff.
  • Is aware of how to raise concerns and can follow the process.

Service Delivery and Improvement

  • To provide specialist, technical and clinical advice to patients & relevant colleagues in the perioperative/TAU setting.
  • Demonstrate relevant technology, IT and keyboard skills to enable electronic data collection.
  • Complete relevant audits and collate data to improve care. Work with the team to create and complete action plans from audits.
  • Ensure the safe control, custody and administration of all drugs within the perioperative area in accordance with Trust Policies and national legislation.
  • Assist the team leader to effectively manage and lead a multidisciplinary team under pressure in, at times, a highly stressful environment, including emergency situations.
  • At no time should the post holder work outside their defined level of competence. If the post holder has concerns regarding this they should immediately discuss this with their team leader/manager
  • The post holder has the responsibility to inform those supervising their duties if they are not competent to perform a duty.

People Management and Development

  • Support in management initiatives as appropriate
  • Provide support to nursing and non-nursing managerial staff.
  • Undertake assessment of practice and supporting learners in practice of nursing training, new staff and learners on pre and post basic education courses and promotes a positive learning environment.
  • Ensure the provision of a safe working environment for the staff, patients and visitors at all times in line with the Health and Safety at work act.
