The Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Haywards Heath is part of the University Hospital Sussex NHS Trust which has 4 acute teaching hospitals.
We provide District General hospital services to our local population in and around Brighton and Hove, Mid Sussex and the western part of East Sussex and more specialised and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the South East of England.
The Urology department at PRH is expanding, due to the future opening of our new Urology Investigation and Treatment Centre (UITC), and there is now the opportunity for a Band 7 Faster Diagnostic Nurse to join the team. This expert nurse post will provide clinical support, nursing care and clinical leadership for patients referred on the suspected cancer pathway for Urology cancer.
We would consider a developmental role at Band 6, with agreed competencies to be achieved within 12 months.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work as an integral member of the specialist team, collaborating with primary and secondary care, clinical and operational teams, to ensure those referred on the pathway receive a high quality, safe, effective and timely diagnostic pathway. You must be enthusiastic with excellent communication skills in order to liaise effectively with the multi-disciplinary teams and strive to provide high standards of care. You will be highly motivated and dedicated to your role and own personal development and have had extensive experience as a Band 6 or senior nurse. Ideally you would have experience in urology or cancer settings.
The role will support compliance against the 28d and 62d standard for Cancer Waiting Time (CWT) guidance, working autonomously and in collaboration with colleagues, proactively identifying potential and actual risks for non-compliance with the pathway, instigating mitigating actions or escalating as appropriate.
The urology team comprises of committed and supportive Consultants, Clinical Nurse Specialists, FDN's, Patient Navigator and other team members. Working collaboratively we aim to ensure that our patients are supported and cared for to a standard that ensures excellent patient experience and clinical outcomes.

- Support compliance against the 28d and 62d cancer waiting times (CWT) guidance for the Urology suspected cancer pathway.
- Responsible for the effective management of patients referred urgently by GPs for suspected Urology cancer, to conduct both telephone and face to face assessment of patients as to their suitability for diagnostic investigations such as Imaging or endoscopy, including history taking and physical assessment (where appropriate and within scope of practice).
- Provide comprehensive, consistent and clear information including clear decisions regarding next actions.
- To decide on the appropriate next step for the patients based on symptoms and book the appropriate appointments or investigations directly using relevant systems.
- To review results of investigations and act on them accordingly with the support of medical colleagues.
- Work autonomously as an expert practitioner in the Urology 62d pathway, acting as a resource for other interdisciplinary health care professionals.
- Participate as a key member of the multi professional team within cancer pathways, ensuring appropriate referral and discussion with other members of the team to optimise patient care.
- Implement clinical vetting and triage to support faster diagnosis and delivery of the 28d standard pathway, in collaboration with the clinical lead and wider Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT).
- Demonstrate appropriate expert practice and specialist advice in theassessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This includes history taking, physical assessment (where appropriate and within scope of practice) and the requesting of agreed diagnostic procedures/ clinical investigations.
- Use specialist skills and knowledge for assessing and interpreting acute and other conditions, taking appropriate action as required.
- Monitor and support patient pathways on a daily basis, taking action to expedite next steps to avoid unnecessary delays for the patient.
- Maintain regular contact with patients as required, paying particular attention to patients who may be deemed at risk of nonattendance or who may be experiencing delays in the pathway.
- Support operational teams in managing demand and capacity, by proactively monitoring pathways and escalating potential and actual risks for pathway progress to cancer and divisional management teams.
- To review all results for suspected Urology cancer patients. To act accordingly on these results with the support of medical colleagues whilst keeping the patient fully informed.
