Job summary

In order to facilitate and support safe patient care in surgery, theatre band 2 opportunities have arisen to join our operating theatre team at Princess Royal hospital in the role of Health Care Assistant.

There are many different surgical specialties at Princess Royal Hospital these include Urology, Orthopedics with a dedicated a hip fracture service, Breast, ENT, Obstetrics, Gynecology and digestive diseases. We have also recently purchased a robot and have started robotic surgery.

We are a busy department and a friendly team. We are looking to appoint enthusiastic and committed Health Care Assistants. You will need to have good communication skills and a commitment to providing a high standard of patient care.

The successful candidate will work closely with the theatre team to ensure safety of the patient in the operating theatre. You will be expected to work shifts to enable us to meet the needs of the department.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as a circulating member of the theatre team in the main theatre and obstetric theatre, following policies and procedure for the counting recording and checking of swabs, needles and instruments.
  • Anticipate the need for sterile items required by the scrub practitioner and surgical team. Open and transfer these items into the sterile field, following principles of aseptic technique.
  • Give support when needed for patients undergoing local anaesthesia, using communications skills to allay anxiety. Report any changes in patient's condition to nursing staff and Operating Department Practitioners.
  • Provide support to patients when escorting them to and from the Operating Department.
  • Assist the scrub practitioners to prepare and lay up the trolleys for the operating lists.
  • Assist with patients' personal clinical care.
  • Assist with the safe positioning and transferring of patients to the operating table, adhering to manual handling policies and maintaining the patient's dignity
