An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Business Intelligence (BI) Department at University Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust (UHSx). We are looking for a BI Development Manager to take the lead for specific areas of BI development work.
You will support the BI Department and wider organisation in the reduction of existing manual data management processes through the introduction of smarter tools and approaches. You'll also ensure these approaches and tools are used for new analytical reporting requirements as well as provide support, guidance, and training to allow other members of staff to use these as part of their day-to-day business or operations.
At the same time, you'll be acting as an ambassador for good data management and will help broker stronger relationships between the BI Department and its key stakeholders.
You'll already have experience of working with end-to-end informatics development processes, specifically relating to data tools and BI analytics. You'll be comfortable with aspects such as understanding end user requirements, the building of complex data sets, the development of analytical tools and providing training and support where you think its most necessary.
Finally, you'll be comfortable in working as part of a team and taking the lead of analytical projects where required and your proactive nature will ensure that projects run on time and key stakeholders are engaged with throughout the life cycle of the development.
Main duties of the job
To develop solutions which support the strategic and operational BI support function and cycle for the clinical and corporate divisions ensuring all Business Intelligence Managers, and wider BI team contribute to a value-added, forward-looking, and wide-ranging BI service.
To develop, design and deliver dashboards and reporting solutions from the Trust's data warehouse, and lead on discrete areas of work which evolve the data warehouse into one which is optimised for BI.
Work seamlessly with the data warehouse team to ensure the reporting layer is designed to meet internal and external reporting requirements.
Responsible for developing and maintaining a broad portfolio of routine and ad-hoc information, analysis and reports to internal and external stakeholders.
To lead on the development and maintenance of information databases and associated extract routines, ensuring data quality and data integrity are preserved. The Business Intelligence Development Manager will play a key role in developing the service to best meet the needs of the Trust; working closely with clinicians and managers to identify their information requirements and developing appropriate solutions.
The post holder has lead responsibility for a complex and diverse range of information work streams and has close working relationships with a wide range of staff.
Information and analyses provided by the post-holder will underpin decisions affecting the Trust.

- To work with all members of the BI team and other teams responsible for Performance and use of BI, e.g., Commissioning team, to ensure that all areas of Performance, trust business and use of business intelligence across the Trust are monitored effectively and consistently.
- Present the reporting solutions to a wide range of staffing as required where appropriate. Discuss any areas of concern with the relevant Divisional lead.
- Develop constructive working relationships with Divisional managements and clinical teams to ensure that a performance focused culture where safety, quality and excellent patient care are consistently delivered though the provision of high-level analytical interpretation and modelling services.
- To clearly articulate and translate the methodology and output of complex analyses to staff at all levels and in various roles within the organisation.
- To be the lead BI Development Manager for several information work streams and/or departments, attending regular meetings and working closely with divisional clinicians and managers to identify information requirements.
- To present and report performance and other highly complex information verbally and in writing, adjusting presentation styles to meet the requirements of different audiences. This will include both regular and ad-hoc reports.
- To ensure routine and regular contact with departmental managers relating to their departments performance.

- To proactively analyse trends and identify exceptions on a wide range of performance measures and to alert responsible managers when necessary.
- To forecast and model activity, demand, capacity and waiting lists and other complex information in relation to performance targets, service, and business planning.
- To develop reporting solutions using advanced functions in MS Excel e.g., SQL integration and VBA automation, Power BI or SSAS to provide better insight for information end-users.
- To lead on the development of performance indicators and other information to support service improvement at both a corporate and divisional level.
- To make use of appropriate clinical and productivity benchmarking metrics from resources such as HED and the Model Hospital to provide additional context and insight to support the delivery of planned care.
- To provide assurance on the quality of information provided through the application of routine data quality tests and checks, liaising with relevant teams where problems have been identified in the source data.

- To effectively plan and manage own workload and that of immediate reports to ensure core objectives are met while ensuring individual wellbeing is not adversely affected.
