An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated Physiotherapist interested in specialising in Neurology to join our Band 6 Neuro Rotation.
Our 8-month neurology rotations are across a broad range of clinical areas based between the newly developed Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, Brighton General Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.
Rotations offered:
- Neurosurgery and Neurosciences
- Stroke Unit
- Neurological Rehabilitation (Regional 2a Neurological Rehabilitation Unit)
- Acute Neuro Inpatients
- Neurological Outpatients
This post would suit a Band 6 or experienced Band 5 Physiotherapist, with good all-round experience and at least one Band 6 or senior Band 5 rotation in neurology, looking to extend their specialist knowledge and skills. The candidate should have confidence in their clinical reasoning and problem-solving when working with patients with neurological dysfunction as well as excellent organisational, prioritisation and time management skills. We provide regular supervision as well as opportunities for continual professional development.You will be supported by a Neurophysiotherapist Team Lead in each clinical area and have the opportunity to connect with colleagues across the Trust and the care pathways.

Main duties of the job
To assess and treat a caseload of neurological patients, who may have a complex and/or chronic presentation, and develop management programmes without direct supervision from senior staff.
To work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Support the clinical Team Lead Physiotherapist with day-to-day operational management of the teams' activities.
To undertake evidence-based practice, and participate in departmental research and audit.
To be responsible for teaching, supervision and appraisal of recently qualified physiotherapists, physiotherapy support workers and undergraduate students, and be involved in the teaching of MDT staff.
To actively promote and develop equality and diversity practices and strategic management in this area in order to promote equity of access of care for patients and equity of access to job opportunities and development opportunities for staff.
To adhere to Trust policies and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Code of Conduct, Health Care Professions Council Code of Conduct and be guided by National Standards where they exist to develop departmental policies and best practice care.
To participate in the weekend and on call respiratory service.

Communication
- To adapt communication skills to encourage patients to undertake their treatment programme, including patients with communication difficulties e.g. aphasia, Dementia, learning difficulties, visual and hearing impairments and non-English speaking patients.
- To assess capacity to give consent, gain informed consent and have the ability to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment such as patients who have dementia, learning difficulties or who are acutely confused or who are sedated and ventilated.
- To persuade, motivate, reassure, empathise, explain and encourage patients in undertaking their treatment programme, ensure understanding of their condition and communicate effectively with patients and carers to maximise rehabilitation potential.
- To clearly communicate sensitive information to staff, patients and carers. This may include explaining prognoses about long-term disabilities, where an educational and counselling role is required.
- To be able to diffuse potentially hostile and antagonistic situations with staff, patients, and relatives using negotiation and interpersonal skills.
- To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date documentation, in line with legal and departmental requirements, and communicate assessment and treatment results to the appropriate disciplines in the form of reports and letters.
