Applications are invited for the above Consultant post in Ophthalmology based at Southlands and St Richard's Hospitals, part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. This is a replacement post.
The successful applicant will join a team of 8 Consultants who provide Ophthalmic services across a wide geographical area. Provision of the eye services is split mainly across St Richard's Hospital in Chichester and Southlands Hospital in Shoreham. Southlands is a new specialist built Ophthalmology building which opened in 2017. There are a team of non-medical practitioners led by a Consultant Optometrist who also provide medical management of chronic conditions.
The Trust have invested heavily in the eye services in the last few years and we have brought about a number of changes within the department. Most relevant to this advert is the approval to go ahead with an Electronic Healthcare Record which will improve our links with the local community eye services and our management of glaucoma. Hand in hand with this is the development of a virtual clinic pathway for glaucoma to assist us in triaging our patients' needs and focusing the delivery of care.
Main duties of the job
In conjunction with the other consultants, the appointee will be responsible for the elective and emergency care of the patients in our catchment area. A particular focus of the role is provision of glaucoma services and, in common with the remainder of the country, the numbers of patients accessing our services in the coming years is predicted to increase year on year.
In addition to the provision of care to our patients, the appointee will be responsible for the training and supervision of junior doctors and Optometrists who will work alongside medical doctors in clinics.
There is an established Glaucoma lead, Mr FookChang Lam with whom the successful applicant will work alongside and develop the glaucoma service, in particular the liaison with the community services. He is supported by a senior fellow in Glaucoma, and a fellow post in glaucoma / ant segment.
The chosen candidate will be an expert in glaucoma surgery and be proficient in MIGS.
