Job summary

The Estates department at Worthing General Hospital are looking for an enthusiastic Maintenance handyman who ideally has a background in general maintenance repairs and is keen to learn and grow their career within the Estates maintenance team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

You will be working in a friendly team made up of Mechanical Engineers, Electricians, Joiners/Builders/ Painters, who are responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive planned and reactive maintenance service across the Trusts estate, working responsively and effectively to a high standard.

Main duties of the job

To be formally responsible for the provision of a safe, effective and efficient Estates service, including the discharging of corporate liabilities, procurement of Utilities, professional advice on all Estate matters, responsibility and care of all Engineering systems and buildings including grounds. Represent the Trusts interests from corporate, fiscal and statutory compliance aspects. Act as professional and technical End User on matters of procurement and capital provision, including Procure 21. All to meet the Users needs within the resources available.

Job responsibilities

  • Delivery of the maintenance services, ensuring that requests are dealt with speedily, particularly in situations where there may be a risk to patients, staff or anyone using the building.
  • To resolve immediate maintenance problems by directly utilising basic trade skills and available resources.
  • Test fire alarm systems, call points, fire exits, door retaining devices, fire emergency lights and log the results weekly or periodically as required. To ensure accurate and easily accessible records are kept of all tests undertaken. Such records should be readily available to all appropriate authorities such as HSE (Health & Safety Executive), CQC, EHO Environment agency etc.
  • Ensure all ventilation units and lights are kept in working order and replace any defective lights, units.
  • Assist in Water hygiene testing and maintenance.

You will also be engaging in a wide range of other duties and tasks as instructed by the Chargehand when required.

  • Working to City and Guilds Craft Apprenticeship or NVQ Level II and/or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of range of building maintenance procedures and thorough working knowledge of painting and decorating.

Desirable

  • Qualification in City & Guilds Craft to Level II, plus relevant experience.
  • Experience of working in hospital environment. Experience of working in large commercial or residential premises.

Skills

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to communicate and receive routine information to inform non -technical clients, patients, Estates managers and Help Desk.
  • Work as a team member under direction of Estates colleagues.
  • Must have experience of working face to face and developing customer relationship.

  • Able to use a full range of hand and electrical tools.
  • High levels of hand/eye coordination and accuracy required. Working at height via, ladders or platforms
