Job summary

An exciting opportunity is available for a Practice Education Lead (PEL) role in the Clinical Education Department. This post would suit highly motivated and adaptable individuals who are passionate about clinical education and, in particular, practice-based education.

  • Band 7 - £43,742 - £50,056 Per annum (pro rata for part time/job share)
  • Location: Various sites Trustwide (travel required across Trust sites). Please note that Haywards Heath has been stated purely to meet the requirement of the recruitment software system.

Main duties of the job

The role of PEL has the ability to shape future education delivery for the Trust. This is an important role in the development and delivery of the clinical education strategy. The post holder is required to be the key operational level management link between the Trust, learners and a Higher Education Institution (HEI). As such, they are involved, as a Trust and profession representative, in curriculum design; selection of students to programme; programme management meetings; programme and Trust teaching; placement allocation and management (including quality assurance and improvement); Trust investigations; and university fitness to practice panels. Clinical practice time in the operational environment is expected as part of the ongoing PEL role.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The PEL is responsible for ensuring there are enough appropriately educated Practice Educators (PEds) for the student numbers in their area; designing and teaching on Practice Educator and other courses; supporting PEds with student review meetings and developmental action plans; and auditing and feeding back on PEd performance.

The PEL provides development and support to students in the SECAmb practice learning environment. This includes design and facilitation of student induction courses; supporting students during their placements with the Trust and responding to student concerns. The post holder will perform a lead role in the clinical and professional development of staff and students whilst promoting best clinical practice across the range of ambulance duties.

The successful applicant will be expected to use highly developed interpersonal and communication skills to develop, support and motivate individuals and groups within the learning environment. An ability to develop and maintain excellent inter-professional partnership working with a range of stakeholders both internally and externally will be required in this role. There is a requirement for applicants to be educated to graduate level or possess a similar standard of knowledge, skills and experience. The applicant also needs to be an experienced HCPC registered paramedic (specific details in Person Specification) and to be able to fulfil the requirements of the operational paramedic job description. Applicants must also hold a SECAmb approved mentorship qualification (or equivalent) along with evidence of recent mentoring. The ability to travel between Trust and HEI sites, that are inaccessible by public transport, is a requirement. Previous experience of working in a learning environment is desirable.

  • Undertake clinical practice and continuous professional development, including maintaining a portfolio in line with professional registration.
  • Comply with both Trust and HCPC codes of conduct, and relevant policies and procedures at all times.

Management

  • Work with other Practice Education Leads (PELs), other Trust managers and the Clinical Education administration team to ensure the number of PEds across the Trust is sufficient to support the number of students requiring practice-based education placements.
  • To develop and maintain close working relationships with education providers, commissioners and other stakeholders

Administration

  • Comply with Trust and legislative requirements for confidentiality.
  • Maintain up to date and accurate records for the Practice Education Database and of learners in the practice setting.
  • Monitor numbers of failing/struggling learners and learner complaints to highlight trends and inform action planning.

Education

  • Develop effective working relationships within the Trust, partner HEIs and across the Health and Social Care community to ensure the supply of high-quality practice-based education opportunities for learners.
  • Design, facilitate and support the training, education and updating of those clinical staff (such as PEds) who have a role in teaching and assessing learners in practice.
